1100 miniature cars whizz around Metropolis II

This 6m by 9m art installation features more than 1100 Matchbox-style cars going around 19 curved roadways. According to its creator, Chris Burden, this is to highlight the last days of the "free car" — in other words, the independent ability to simply jump in an automobile and travel.

Metropolis II took four years to build and is set to go on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this northern autumn. In advance of its debut, as well as for those of us not living in LA, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Shulman of Catfish fame just released this short documentary about the art installation.
