Acer Aspire One

By Rory Reid on 23 June 2008

The Acer Aspire One is better than most netbooks. It's fantastic for anyone who wants a small, cheap machine on which to type and surf the Web. However, its battery life lets it down slightly.

    • Good: More video memory than others for games.

Runs Internet Explorer 7 with easy.

Stylish and light, glossy back and screen.

      Windows Xp version is better.

      Works great on external monitor.

About as fast as Pentium 3
    • Bad: No Bluetooth.

Great Mini Laptop. I can play World of Warcraft on it, with no problems. I have the Xp version with 1gb of Ram and 224mb Shared video card. Just create a game iso using Img Burn and off you go. It does everything a normal laptop does. Its very fast with Wireless internet at 7.2mbps. Battery life is about 2 hours worth playing WOW.

    • Good: Good paperweight, door stopper, cup holder.
    • Bad: No codec support, cannot install applications like VLC, very poor battery life, bad sound quality

Just bought it, wat a crappy little thing! All i can do is browse the net (half of facebook isnt visible), use open office and play tetris. The speakers are too **** for listening to MP3's and no video's only some WMA will work. What the hell are they thinking at ACER?!?!?!?? No quicktimes, no divx, no avi's nothing... You cannot even upgrade the codecs, install emulations, anything! Cause of linpus user restrictions.. Would not recommend the linux version to ANYBODY!!

    • Good: Size, weight are both great.
    • Bad: Mouse pad is awfull. However overcame issue by purchase of small wireless optical mouse.

Just purchased as replacement for older standard size laptop. Love the size, weight of the unit. Hve the XP unit but am annoyed that Acer refuse to supply O/S discs to allow recovery in the event of HDD failure. If HDD is okay recovery from hidden partition is okay. Acer argue that no disk drive means no disks supplied nor will they sell recovery O/S.

    • Good: weight, size, keyboard, screen, 120 GB, 3 USB etc..
    • Bad: no bluetooth, but can be tweaked, I've read.
      No 3G installed (in mine)
      fan noise

very handy, good keyboard and screen. Ideal for travelling: compact and lightweight. Battery life more than 5 hours with 6 cell-battery.

    • Good: small and compact. great when travelling.
    • Bad: cashback offer is a joke!

Murray, i wish i'd read your review before i purchased the laptop. I sent in my cashback request 2 weeks ago via Express Post but whenever I check their website, it keeps saying "pending supporting documents". so i called them yesterday and after waiting nearly 30 mins on the phone, spoke to an unhelpful chap by the name of "Cameron" who said i had to wait 7 weeks for them to "receive and process" my claim and another 4 weeks for the cheque to arrive in the mail, even though their terms & conditions only mentioned that it could take up to 8 weeks for the cheque to arrive via regular mail. how ridiculous! have they employed 1 part-timer to process their claims?

    • Good: lightweight, great design, love the color and it comes with XP rather than Vista
    • Bad: limited battery life

Does anyone know where to get a 6 cell battery for the acer aspire one? or when it will be available? apparently with the 6 cell battery it can last up from 6 to 7 hrs. It might be a bit heavier but i doubt by very much....does anyone know when or where i can get one?

  • Murray gave 5/10 on 29/09/2008 10:17

    • Good: Portablity and weight.
    • Bad: It is a pity that a fairly good product is let down by the company that makes it. The cashback offer is a joke and you really have to fight to get the cashback. Without the cashback, the product is not so much "value for money". I would hate to have a warranty problem !!

Biggest issue for me is the trackpad. Perhaps it is just me, but I cannot seem to get it to do what I want; instead it either enlarges the page but doesn't go where I need it to. In its truly portable mode, this has been an issue. At home, a cordless keyboard / mouse combo fixes that problem.
