AMD, Nvidia refresh their mobile graphics

Same chip, different name. That's what consumers will be getting with the new mobile graphics chips recently announced by AMD and Nvidia.

AMD's new Radeon 7000M series is basically a re-badging of the existing 6000M chips. This practice of re-branding products happens often in the graphics segment — Nvidia is usually the culprit here — but it seems that AMD, too, has joined in.

Due to production delays, AMD is unlikely to launch its new 28nm graphics chips by the end of the year, but as the company is committed to releasing new mobile products, this leads to the re-badging. Hence, the entry-level and mid-range products announced today are identical to its current 6000M chips. Meanwhile, Nvidia did a similar thing yesterday: the new Nvidia GeForce 600M line-up is identical to its lower-end GeForce 500M chips, but have a different name.

As graphics chipmakers tend to release the desktop versions of their latest graphics chips before the mobile ones, the fact that AMD and Nvidia have yet to announce their next-gen desktop graphics products should have been a big red flag.

If that means the the new model Envys are going to be available sooner then I'm all in favour of whatever kind of rebadging of graphics cards goes on to do it.
