ANZ launches tailor-made iPhone banking website

By Suzanne Tindal on 11 July 2008

ANZ has catered to those users about to purchase an iPhone by launching a new internet banking service customised for the device.

The bank's website now has a "device recognition layer" that detects if Web surfers are using an iPhone. If so, they are redirected to a Web page designed specially for the iPhone. The ANZ team has been working on the recognition layer and website over the last few months.

"We're always looking at increasing the choices available to our customers. When new technologies come on board we harness them," a spokesperson for the bank told ZDNet.com.au. "Going by market reaction, it's going to have a positive take up."

At first, users will only be able to use the Contact us and Locate us functions on the tailor-made website. They will also have the option to transfer to the normal website.

After a few months, the service will be expanded to allow users to see their transaction history, transfer money between accounts, and make use of the Pay anyone feature. They will, however, be able to do these using their iPhone on the normal ANZ site from today.

The staggered approach was put in to make sure the technology wouldn't have any glitches when handling people's money. "With internet banking in general, it takes a lot more development and testing for accuracy, security and reliability," the spokesperson said.

"It's not just like visiting a normal website where you are viewing something for entertainment. It's looking at financial details."

If other iPhone-like mobile devices come onto the market, the recognition layer can be tweaked so they can also be used to view the website, the spokesperson said, adding that the bank expects this will occur.

LeadMagnet, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. iPhone has some features that are unique. It also lacks a number of things such as flash. Having an iPhone specific website enhances the customer experience. Said website would not work optimally on a Blackberry, for example. Nice optimism on the windows mobile as well. I spose you predicted MS Zoom to take over as well. Happy to argue as we're writing iPhone software for the banks right now.

Sorry I had to comment, I was just hit with some transitional advertisments (in-between webpages) for this new iPhone site. I'm with ANZ and I absolutely hate how far they're endorsing the new iPhone. Basically doing what everyone in Australia who has the opportunity of doing, is doing: gouging the huge iPhone fanbase here in Australia. I'd say that's why they [iPhones] are vastly more expensive here - because if you've got a fanbase of people who are going to buy one no-matter what (and you're a moralless, faceless corporation), why wouldn't you make it cost the earth?

the pricing quoted from Steve jobs was conditional of entering a contract period. If u seriously thought u would be able to buy one for USD199 outright u have rocks in your head. They still have great mro on aus which generally speaking gives you a cheap final price for the handset.

Why is it that Iphones are going for $600 + yet in the iphone 3g launch they promised that they would be no more than 199 and 299 us which should make it no more than 250 and 350 each?? This must just be profitiering by aussie telcos!

What a croc. I dont see why iPhones need any special treatment. I am willing to wager all funds in my ANZ account that there will be more Windows Mobile users out there this time next near then iPhone users, but do they get a special site.... iPhone hype = "insert vomit icon here"
