Apple acknowledges iPhone's antenna issue

Apple has finally acknowledged that the way you hold the iPhone 4 can hinder the device's cellular reception.

Complaints about weakening or disappearing signals when the iPhone 4 is gripped in a particular way — usually by touching two seams of the antenna band on the exterior of the phone simultaneously — began popping up late Wednesday night, and continued to appear on Thursday.

While internet commenters and bloggers spent most of the day trying to figure out if the problem was related to the phone's hardware or software, Apple released a statement late in the day to PC Magazine.

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower-left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

There are two antennas on the iPhone, which are built into the steel band on the exterior of the phone. The one running on the left side of the phone is for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the one on the right is for cellular reception. That means how a left-handed person holds the phone will affect it differently than how most right-handed people would hold it.

Steve Jobs said at WWDC that the exterior antenna was supposed to help reception — he didn't mention there was a particular way you had to avoid touching it. However, if you don't feel like spending more for a case for the phone, it sounds like that's the cheapest solution.

I tried an iPhone and couldn't wait to get back to my Blackberry. The core neccessity of a mobile phone is to send and receive signals. If it doesn't do this, does it qualify as a phone? Would you accept a new car that you couldn't move? Maybe it should be iBrick.

What an Apple product with a design flaw and with a $1000 price tag!! Typical Apple, always selling the "sizzle" but not delivering the real thing or delivering but overcharging for fashion accessories as usual.

Hmm - As this is a defect, I wonder if they will be made to rectify, otherwise quite a few people will probably be aboe to get refunds under the Trade Practices Act. I also wonder how the Telcos will feel if people start coming back to their stores to vent over a defective product?

This seems funny considering all that needs to be done is put a 0.5 mm clear rubber band around the metal to stop people touching the antenna.......

Thank you for your article.Does the design of the iPhone 4's antenna contribute to lower signal reception? Hope you will continuo your informative post

sounds like the antenna isn't insulated and ones hand is shorting the antenna's together if so it really is a silly over site.
The case fixes it as insulates the antenna.
If I'm right touching the antenna each to an earthed surface should kill the signal also.
If it does paint the metal with some lacqar if you want nude phone.

20 demonstrator models in my local Apple store all lost signal when I tried them.

My current iPhone 3G doesn't have this problem. In fact, none of my previous phones have had this problem.

I think the bumper makes the phone look ugly, and if that's the solution, then it's a no-sale for me.
