Apple iPhone OS 4.0: more multi-touch, multitasking

Apple iPhone operating system

Tech blog Boy Genius Report (BGR) is leaking Apple rumours like a spine-tingling sieve, including a possible first glance at what's in store for iPhone owners with the next version of Apple's iPhone operating system.

BGR reports that its anonymous source has seen more ways for applications to run in the background to allow multitasking. There's also a simplified and streamlined user interface, and improved calendar and contact syncing. Could that be the Facebook contact sync that is now de rigueur on Android phones such as the Google Nexus One?

One feature that the iPhone slaps Android-powered phones in the face with — like a dead insult fish — is multi-touch, and the rumours are that more multi-touch gestures will be available in iPhone OS 4.0.

We may see a larger-than-life version of the iPhone OS on the fabled iTablet we expect to be launched next Wednesday, which should give us a hefty hint as to what's also in store for this year's iPhone.

Dont understand the fascination with multi-touch had an iphone and now a HD2 and while it was gimmicky hardly worth choosing your phone by that one feature.

Better syncing of tasks with MS Outlook on a PC (not a Mac) via USB cable would be a great help.

Oh I forgot, they have to add a native task manager first.

Also, a homescreen that can be customised show today's agenda and tasks would mean I don't have to jailbreak this dumb thing anymore.

So is this OS upgrade only on the iphones sold after the release date, or is it downloadable for your current iphone 3GS?

all iPhone updates are free for any iPhone owners. So yes if you currently own a 3G or 3GS iPhone - you will be able to have the 4.0 update.

I almost think its mandatory somehow?
