Apple iPod Photo (30GB)

Apple's new iPod Photo models are competitively priced and introduce a much-needed feature.

User rating:9.8
That confusing noise you're hearing? It's the sound of tens of thousands of photographers tripping over each other to purchase Apple's newly updated iPod Photo, while another 10,000 photographers who bought the first-generation model loudly curse Steve Jobs's name. Why? Because the latest iPod Photo models, available in 30GB and 60GB sizes, are much more affordable, and they finally give photographers the highly useful option, sorely lacking on previous versions, of uploading pictures directly from a digital camera.

Upside: Costing just AU$60 more than a normal, photoless 20GB iPod, the 30GB iPod Photo offers great value for the price. Similarly, the 60GB model is a whopping AU$349 cheaper than when it was first introduced -- we meant it when we said that people who bought the first one would be furious. With the optional iPod Camera Connector accessory and a software update (both available in March), photographers will be able to transfer images directly to their iPods without having to run them through iPhoto first.

Downside: Honestly, it's almost disingenuous for Apple to so drastically improve the iPod Photo this time around, since the lower price and the direct upload option are features that probably should have been there in the first place. Luckily for owners of the older version, the same firmware upgrade will allow their iPod Photos to behave like the new ones. It's also unclear if direct uploading will work with existing iPod media readers and digital camera connectors; if it doesn't, having to buy Apple's proprietary attachment won't sit well with consumers who already shelled out for "approved" photo peripherals.

Outlook: Apple appears to have gotten this one right, however belatedly. It bears repeating that the previous iPod Photo's inability to support direct uploading was a deal breaker for many potential buyers, not to mention the exorbitant price of the first models. With the 30GB version priced to move at AU$499 and the 60GB iPod Photo now at a mere AU$649 -- compared to the ludicrous AU$949 price tag it carried at launch -- these babies will likely start flying off shelves.

iPod is outclassed by creative, once again.

ipod sucks in sound quality, video quality and everything else. i had one but got a refund and bought a cheaper Creative Zen Vision:M. the screen's really great. Best. Mp3. Player. Ever

Size is good, battery is not

Video is good but 2.5 screen is a bit too small for me. Battery is fair for now, but 4-hour-charge and run for only-2-hour-on-video sucks, more over, in a year time, battery dead, how am I gonna change it? - should be removable!

    ipod scam

hmm. looks and sounds impressive but as my 20gb ipod (with click wheel)has just died (never dropped, battery was still giving at least 10hrs play) tried everything possible except the brick wall shock treatment!) the service options are woeful to say the least! Using ipods service request form off their site.(credit card info must be given when filling in form) When you cut to the chase you have only 2 options 1: send it in for battery service (approx $90.00 plus postage)
2:Send it in for whole ipod repair. Which I am led to believe is most likely an exchange for another one.for (approx $385.00). Thats great isn't it! my ipod when new was $400. And the warranty on the $385 exchange ipod = a whole 90 yes ninety days.
If you have to buy an apple mp3 player please take out the extended warranty! Mine is now 13 months old and as the battery was going strong then I can only take a gamble on sending it in for battery service to find out it wasn't that. or shell out another $385 to get another one with a 90 day warranty. until it stopped working I thought it was the best piece of techknowledge I had ever bought (you know what thought did!)

    it is too exspensive

it would be a much more desired product if the prices were lower therefor more people would buy it and then it would make the more profit because more people bought it at a lower price.

Pretty Simple when you think about it.

Just do it it will make a difference to the company

    TRUST ME!!!

    Decent case that actually fits???

I've had one of these for a few months now (upgraded from £G 10GB) and am still having problems finding a "skin" that actually fits properly - Apple produced this size for such a short time that the case manufacturers haven't really produced anything geared exactly for it - tried a few 20GB skins, but they just look stretched...any ideas???

    battery sucks

The i Pod is a gimmick. You get sucked in by the glamour of its looks which are impressive. But under the cover it is a lemon waiting to sting you.
