Apple to look at iPhone 3G iOS 4 problems

By Erica Ogg on 29 July 2010

Some iPhone 3G owners who upgraded their phone to the latest iOS software have complained of slowness and shorter battery life. Apple now says it will be looking into the complaints.

That's according to what one spokesperson at the iPhone maker told The Wall Street Journal.

Since iOS 4 was released in mid-June, iPhone 3G owners have voiced problems with the phone seemingly grinding to a halt: slow keyboard response time, frozen unlock screens and a battery that drains faster than with previous versions of the software.

One reader told ZDNet Australia's sister site CNET that "The OS update has made my two-year-old 3G massively slower in performing all tasks; it barely rings for five seconds before going to voicemail now! It freezes in typing, web browsing, and all other apps like it never did before iOS 4."

Apple's own support forums show hundreds of postings with similar complaints.

According to those customers on the support forum, Apple customer service has been telling 3G users to restore their iPhones to the factory settings, effectively downgrading their device to iOS 3.

My 3g runs really badly now. Even something so basic as playing music might mean looking at a white screen for minutes, and sometimes music skips backwards and forwards if I then try to run another application. I'm planning to have a go at rolling back to an earlier version this weekend.

Maybe Apple should change their name to "beta." It is quite common for companies to make dramatic unwarranted name and image changes, but for once it would be logical: they'd be changing their name to "beta" simply to admit they are now users their loyasl customers are unwitting guinea pigs to test their products.
Microsoft has widely advertised early release programs for its software so those who wish to can test those products, Apple just calls their test program "general release."

Apples reliance on customer loyalty seems to bet getting further abused, early up takers of there technology are once again receiving the brunt of the issues and just like Apples over censorship (now also in the bookstore) reported in the last few days this will create another setback that I’m sure the company could have done with not coming to light at the moment in time.

However for them to neglect the full testing of iOS4 on the 3g , means inturn there neglecting the need of current customers it seems there so focused on “this changes everything” that they forget what everything is or was and that should be providing full support to current consumers of there products.

It is another setback once again for Apple it will be interesting to see what's next in the news regarding iPhone/iPad issues (antenna, manufacturing and service charges) and their steps to refund cases won’t make up for the iPhone 4's lack of function over form.

But Apple have created such a loyal following that people may just put up with what issues there are for the sake of owning the latest Apple product.
Personally, I'd be happier with an older iPhone - at least then the issues are all ironed out.

However, it's also interesting to see how much excitement new technologies can bring. New technology and innovation is important for new business, illustrated by entrepreneurship grants and new business competitions like http://www.ukesnc.com.

    Guess it's not all bad!

iOS4 has brilliant battery life and performance on my 3G. But my phone's jailbroken and I've enabled iOS4 multitasking and use SBSettings to kill the apps I don't want running in the background.

I wonder if the issue is that Apple disabled the multitasking, but not the fact that apps need to be manually killed in iOS4, so they're running in the background anyway.

This is what happened to my old 3G when i upgraded to iPhone OS 3. Forced me to upgrade to the 3Gs which is great and works faster with iOS4 than iPhone OS 3.

Not to sure about that solution. Unless you know how - and it's a very complex process - you can't actually go back to iOS 3.x. This is by deliberate design by Apple.
