AVG Internet Security 8.0
By Robert Vamosi on 10 March 2008
AVG Internet Security 8.0 provides strong protection against malicious Web sites, but its full-system scans sometimes tax system resources and produce false positives.

- Good: Most things
- Bad: Identity protection module
Whether AVG ID is a resource hog or not depends on what resources you have.
I've just spent a LONG time trying to resolve a friend's PC performance which had suddenly gone into reverse. It is small and old (P4 1.9 256mb), but it does what she wants.
She installed the AVG IS Suite months ago on my recommendation based on several years' use. It has worked fine.
I suspected the newly installed 8.5 upgrade / ID module might be the culprit, but did all the checking for virus, malware, registry maintenance etc. etc. first.
No difference, so I started an XP (Home) rebuild from SP1.
I'm now reinstalling the XP updates (excluding SP3). AVG ID is using 92 - 100% CPU and 30% RAM. Windows update is getting the odd 2% here and there.
I can't end AVG ID or disable it mid-flight. At this rate, the updates might be finished by Christmas, but not much before.
It also explains the original performance problems. I can now get to read War & Peace and all of Charles Dickens' works before next needing to hit the 'enter' key..... -

- Good: I love AVG. I had Norton but yours if far better.
- Bad: The pop up message is getting up my nose as it won't go away
My licence No. is :
8i-EECGF-SV7HF-BSLSR-ZX9GB-PNZV6-00SF on O/N 786753. Please advise why a message keeps popping up requesting that I register and only have x number of days left. When I try to do so I am told that AVG already have my registration and to report the matter. I am doing so right now and this has been going on for the last two days and is getting quite monotonous. -

- Good: Free
- Bad: Everything Else
This antivirus program is not very good especially if using torrent. It is susceptible to trojan downloaders especially. Very resource hogging.

- Good: Excellent program with many features.
- Bad: Some false positives.
I've used Norton AV for the past 5 years believing that it would protect my computer.
Six months ago, I installed AVG 8 which found trojans and virused Norton had ignored for years. Norton would seldom tell me that a downloaded file containend malware.
AVG will spot it right away. AVG is fast, Norton makes my duo-core run like a 386 machine.
I would never buy a Norton product again.
Did you know that after a limited number of re-installs, Norton licence expires - you have to buy another licence. This happened to me.
Sorry for the anti-Norton diatribe.

- Good: Fast scan, and doesnt slow the system while u doing something unlike the norton and syn.
I don't blame the AVG for the wrong reason when you get errors, The users more likely didn't either uninstall the previous anti virus or didn't set it up probably...
I have use it since 2006 work fine, not just got the v.8 even better -

The interface is very user friendly and its impact on system resources is hardly noticable.
Set up and forget. Excellent product!

- Bad: just about everything
Have had nothing but problems with AVG Internet Security 8.0. Keep getting messages that the network scanner has stopped working and it had disabled all the printers on my network from being used by this computer. It is a terrible resource hog, slows everything down. I have contacted tech support through the email system they have ( no forums for some reason) but they have not responded yet. If you want to spend your hard earned money on an anti-virus, skip this one. try Kaspersky or NOD32.
