Home theatre electronics are in a constant state of flux, and most components are on the shelves for only 12 months at a time -- sometimes as little as six! But when it comes to speakers, things move much more slowly. After five years, the venerable DM600 S3 series from B&W has earned an update.

The new 600 series is a bit of a departure from the previous range, not only is the naming convention different (eg the numbers counter-intuitively count down as you move up the range) but the speakers have been redesigned from the ground up.

Another interesting development is that the 300 series seems to have disappeared from the 2007 B&W line-up, making the 600 series now the budget range.

Upside
The B&W 685 is the largest bookshelf speaker in this new series, and sits between the old DM601 and DM602 in both price (AU$999) and size. It comes in quite a large box, which is almost as long as it is tall: 340mm high by 198mm wide and 331mm deep.

B&W have always believed in "trickle-down" technology, and techniques which were incorporated into the flagship 800 series have wound up here. Firstly, the 6.5-inch woofer features a new fixed phase-plug (the conical plug in the middle of the speaker cone), a new rubber surround for a smoother midrange response and a copper-clad pole piece for better tweeter integration.

Secondly, the famed 25mm aluminium dome tweeter has been improved to become what B&W claims is the most technologically advanced the company has ever offered in an entry-level product.

Downside
Why fix something that wasn't broken? The DM602 in particular earned itself acclaim when it was first released, and we swear by the quality of the original DM600 range -- the author even has a pair of DM602.5's in his own home system.

The improvements B&W have made seem to imply the speakers are mellower in tone, and while this may please jazz and classical fans, rock enthusiasts may come away disappointed.

The styling may also not be to everyone's taste. It's certainly more industrial-looking and minimalist than any other speaker they've released.

Outlook
We look forward to testing the new series. In the past, the distinctive B&W tweeter has been too bright for some, so it will be interesting to see if there is indeed the leap in quality the company claims. Look out for the 685 Theatre, which includes two 685's, a pair of 686's (AU$799), the HTM62 two-way centre speaker (AU$699.00) and a ASW608 subwoofer (AU$999) for AU$3,499.

I just purchased my 685's less than a week ago and over all I love them but I have found their highs to be quite shrill. I am curious if any one else is of has experienced this. I have been told by many sound stores that this will mellow out with use as they need to break in before they open up. I have never heard of this and need advice. A seconds thought is maybe it is my marantz sr 6006 av receiver. Any help would be appreciated. If I does t improve in a few weeks I will return them due to sheer pain it causes on any volume level

The Good:The midrange and highs are just spectacular sound quality

The Bad:Certain tracks can sound a little dull, although not really a show-stopper

I use the 685s with an NAD T744 A/V receiver in both pure stereo and DTS 5.1 surround sound. The midrange and highs are just spectacular sound quality. This is especially true in the vocals and certain instrumentals like jazz and some pop tracks. You will need a good subwoofer to cover the bass range however. When I auditioned these units in the store I was blown away at how they sounded compared to others that were more than double their price. I won%u2019t say they%u2019re perfect as certain tracks can sound a little dull especially certain rock tracks. Also, positioning makes a difference. If you%u2019re sitting in the sweet spot, you%u2019ll hear some great sound. And they do perform well off-angle. But if you%u2019re too far out, you%u2019ll definitely notice the difference. I would suggest auditing them with some CDs that represent what you%u2019ll mostly be using them for. If they perform to your satisfaction then great. You can get yourself a great set of speakers at a pretty reasonable price relatively speaking.

The Good:Incredible Sound

The Bad:Nothing

After owning these speakers for a little over a month I feel compelled to write a review. They are amazing! I won't go into detail trying to describe how they sound, but they are the best sounding speaker I've ever owned. After breaking them in they will truly amaze you. I find myself watching movies and listening to albums I don't even like just because these speakers make the sound so incredible. They are mesmerizing. Worth every penny

The Good:Very balanced sound overall

The Bad:Not much

I have owned the B&W602S3 before these speakers and was mightily impressed. These new 685's are definitely all round winners. Will show up a bad recording. They need an amp that will put out at least 80 watt RMS to really appreciate.

The Good:for there size the music is very good

The Bad:abit ugly but that grew on me, a long time warming up even after 6 months

I have never owned B&w's before (i'm an infinity man ) but friends have over the years and they always impressed me with their smoothand powerful sound, mine are being driven by an 80watt amp and when warmed up they sing a good intergration of bass mid and high when warmed up I am very happy.

The Good:Great high and mids. Fantastic bass for a speaker this size. Very balanced like the old KEF Reference speakers.

They're beautiful to boot, and will complement any room visually, not a factor to be altogether dismissed.

At the price, nothing from any major manufacture can touch these.

The Bad:While a bigger speaker can generate deeper more present and resonant lows, a good subwoofer (they make one for these) will certainly address that.

For the price, nothing beats them.
