Bang & Olufsen A8 Earphones

The original and still the best, the Bang & Olufsen A8 Earphones sound good and look great, but if you're looking for an exciting result these aren't for you.

Recently, we looked at a pair of headphones that looked disturbingly similar to the A8s, and found them to be quite agreeable. But what of the originals that inspired them?

While originally coming in black only, the A8 now comes in a choice of colours — black, white, green yellow and orange. The 'phones themselves are constructed from anodised aluminium, plastic and hard rubber, and there are some foam covers in the package to prevent the plastic edges of the buds from rubbing on your ears. Like Creative's cheeky Aurvana Airs, the Bang & Olufsen A8s fold over the top of your ear leaving the ear buds resting just inside your auditory canal (OK, we had to look that up — we couldn't just say "ears" again). The fit, as you'd expect, is very similar to the Creative's, but the hinge is better so it's a little easier to get a good initial fit. Moving around, though, is a different matter, and we found that the hinge came loose after a while and the ear buds gravitated away from the ears necessitating you clamping them back down. The Creative's earphones usually stayed put.

Sound quality is a different matter though, and to test this we used them with a variety of different sources including Bang & Olufsen's own BeoSound 6 player and the Creative Zen X-Fi. The A8s have a different sonic character to the excitable Creative set, being more balanced and less "fizzy". As a result they sound better with a greater range of music. Nick Cave's Moonland from the Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! set had a reasonable amount of space and good detail on the vocals. However, the bass was a little lacking and the Creative sounded richer in comparison.

The real clincher for music fans is the price: they're AU$70 cheaper than the Creative set. If out-and-out detail isn't your main goal, and you're looking for a smooth-sounding headphone that's not outrageously expensive then the Bang & Olufsen A8 is a very good and very stylish set of earphones. Pity about the the less-than-optimal fit, though.

Great example of beautiful design and engineering BUT also a triumph of form over function.

I got these as a gift and was SO excited but they are almost unwearably uncomfortable, especially as I wear glasses. I spend more time jiggling them into place and trying to get them to stay there than I do listening to the music. You must wonder if they went straight from the drawing board to production without any 'human testing'.

I hurts to have to go back to my basic apple iPhone headphones but after about a year of using these on several long haul flights, I'm giving up. At least the free white buds are wearable and stay in place.

The Good:Excellent built quality, sound and fit.

The Bad:price. lack of response in very low freq. (below 60Hz or so)

Excelent sound quality. Linear, crisp and detailed. the only weak point is in deeper frequencies like below 60Hz. This is probably why they said it sounded a bit "fizzy". But make sure to use good quality mp3 to extract the best of the A8(preferably 320kbps, Apple lossless format or so)
Its very comfortable. at the beginning it can be a bit cumbersome, but after a while you get used to it and it takes no time to adjust it.
Its a bit expensive, but i think its worth its value.

The Good:Sound Quality, Fit

The Bad:not noise isolating

Fantastic B&O audio quality shown in these little earphones and a fantastic build quality to go with it.

The Good:Very comfortable, neutral sound, excellent build quality, price

The Bad:Could do with a bit more b****

The most comfortable earphones I have ever owned and with very good sound indeed.

Not sure why the reviewer had problems with the hinges; I'e owned two pairs for almost 10 years and had no problems whatsoever with either of them.

The Good:It's B&O quality

The Bad:Hard to wear these and glasses at the same time

Had my set for almost 9 years now and not a single issue with them. Typical B&O sound reproduction. Yes, the bass can sometimes be lower compared to the ear buds that you normally wedge into your ear canal, but these sit slightly outside, so the bass is less prominent.

The Good:Looks, sound, fit, comfort

The Bad:Could use a little more b****

I like these very much. I've had them for years and traveled extensively with them. Just recently, I've started losing sound in one ear, so I assume one of the wires inside the lead has come adrift from its soldered connection.
