Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 4 (65" plasma television)

By Randolph Ramsay on 15 September 2005

Big is one of best ways to describe this new Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 4 plasma -- both in terms of screen real estate and price.

User rating:8.8

Upside
The 65" BeoVision 4 shares the same minimalist styling of its smaller kin, with a sleek, clean frame surrounding the 16:9 screen. If the standard silver isn't your cup of tea, the frame is also available in black, dark grey, blue and red. The BeoVision 4's analog TV tuner and connectors come in a separate driver box, which means the panel itself if kept sleek at only 11cm wide.

As you'd expect from something in this price range, the specs of the screen are quite impressive. This BeoVision boasts a screen resolution of 1366x768 pixels, a contrast of 3000:1, a viewing angle of 160 degrees and more. The screen's driver box is fairly well fitted out with a DVI input as well as S-Video connectors.

Downside
It's a pity that at close to AU$40,000, Bang & Olufsen has left out a few important parts, namely a digital television tuner and speakers. But we're guessing that if you're shopping at this end of the market, spending a few thousand dollars more on sound and a HD-capable set top box isn't going to be a stretch.

Outlook
Quality has never been an issue for Bang & Olufsen, so we expect this screen to produce outstanding pictures. Whether it's worth the hefty price tag is up to your wallet.

might be old post, but i have to say something here. if you dear B&o users (like my father) do think such a technology, lasting 25 years, will be as good as products in 25 years time, you re funny guys. USB, USB-3, firewire. And many many many other formats that won t be physically supported. It s a stupid argument, it s a stupid way of thinking. You could spend your money into something else. It s my point. Just have a look at the lights used in the LCDs.Or the gases used in plasmas. Don t be as dumb. B&o is for rich people who don t bother money neither quality. Just a nice thing.
I would sell you a B&o and in 10 years time it would be BY FAR outdated.
More over, they are ALREADY outdated.
So if you don t mind changing a TV every 8 years, meaning 12500 euros a year for their new TV, go and get it. But you are not someone objective, scientific or cartesian.

    • Good: The best picture quality ive seen in a plasma
    • Bad: Amazing price but so is a bently

    Regarding Guy's comments
There are better T.V.'s for a third of the price.
The same goes for B&O audio products. They are far from the best, with a little bit of research before you buy, you can find far better quality sound and image products.

I have to disagree. Thankfully thousands have satisfied customer have for over 100 years now. I could buy a pioneer but personally i didnt like the picture, too soft and heavily discounted to the point now that they the plasma division gone bust. I simply dont know of a tv that has a better picture and ive seen most belive me. Anyone who says otherwise is delouding themselves or cant afford one and it annoys them.
Regarding the HI-Fi again Guy is way off the mark, sure I can buy a hi-fi that might sound better but it will cost me 3 times the price of the Bang & Olufsen and not link with one remote into other rooms, look as good, or give 25 years plus without a peep of hassle.
Its a no go argument im afriaid sorry. role on another 100 years. B&O

    • Good: Looks nice, like all B&O products.
Have seen the image quality and it is fairly nice.
    • Bad: There are better products out there. People who claim any of B&O's products the best (especially their speakers) are delusional, and haven't researched the market.
More of a style statement, slightly poseur item.

I really wish some people would actually research what their spending money on before they get a product.

But on the other hand, B&O sells a lifestyle image, and that's what people seem to buy into, which is fair enough I suppose. Although my matra is always SUBSTANCE over STYLE, I'd rather actually have the goods, rather than pose that I do.

    • Good: Picture across all sources, sound, ease of use.
    • Bad: None, if you can afford it.

The BeoVision 4 65 might be the most expensive TV on the planet but something has to be. The TV offers a sublime viewing experience across all sources, something that most TV's just can't do. The sound is outstanding. I started by using BeoLab 7-2 on it's own which was amazing and changed to BeoLab 7-4 and BL5's which has now changed my world. The TV is beautifully made and the aluminium frame is stunning. The Beo4 remote makes operation seamless and intuitive.

    • Good: Superb!
    • Bad: Going to have to wait another year for my Aston Martin DBS!!!

Amazing, just ordered the entire setup including DVD etc to add tomy current AV9000 and Beolink system. Can't wait for the system to appear now.

    • Good: Everything. Upconverter, input features. The Beo 2 allows you to upgrade to keep pace with the latest technologies. The ability to swap out frame colors to match room decor. Uniqueness. This is a timeless piece of minimalist art not a CES flash in the pan.
    • Bad: Securing the television is obviously the most important issue in the installation of a 65" screen. However, the wall mount bracket costs more than many plasmas. Unnecessary and unfair to loyal B&O consumers.

It is my distinct pleasure to be able to add this post to your comments area. I have owned my B&O 65" for a little over a year now. There are no words to accurately describe the viewing experience offered by this B&O masterpiece. I have it installed in my homes family room. I serves all of our entertainment needs and then some. There's nothing like watching a lifesize version of Elmo with your 2 year old. The Beo 2 serves as both an input devise and an "upconverter" transfering low quality broadcasts into outstanding visuals and the HD, unreal. Many of the images seem like they are in the room with you. All and all the price point is an issue no matter who you are, the price of a television equal to the cost of a major home renovation, difficult to rationalize, but once you see this plasma in action you will not regret it.

    • Good: Great sound, big screen
    • Bad: The price

this is great oppertunaty but only if you feal like payig $40,000

  • DaMan gave 4/10 on 26/10/2006 05:11 Report abuse

    • Good: Hey B&O makes a great product, top notch quality.
    • Bad: Let's be realistic - You can buy a Pioneer PRO 1540HD with the same picture specifications. Including digital tuner, better & more inputs, generally more of everything at 1/3 of the cost.

    Nice, but...

You know what... if you've got the coin, buy it. Whatever makes you happy spanky.
