Best GPS-enabled mobile phones

By Joseph Hanlon on 04 November 2009

GPS in phones haven't taken that great a leap forward as we expected in 2009. With the growing prevalence of built-in GPS receivers in mobile handsets at the end of last year, it suggested that we'd see a vast improvement in the navigation software installed on the phones we buy. Instead, touchscreens took the spotlight and we've seen only a few phones released with decent navigation apps.

Nokia is still the leading player with its excellent Nokia Maps, now up to the third generation of this software. The best of Nokia's range this year was the 6710 Navigator, which came bundled with a lifetime subscription to voice-guided directions. The iPhone raised our esteem with the release of three full-featured navigation apps on the Apple App Store, with phones running on Windows Mobile and Android operating systems also seeing new apps available to download.

Nokia 6710 Navigator

Nokia's third Navigator in the series is the best of the bunch thus far, though its small screen will dissuade many from binning their TomToms for in-car use.

Best GPS-enabled mobile phones - iPhone. What a joke.

Yet only one WinMo is in. WinMo has the biggest range of internet-free pro-like GPS softwares available (TomTom, Garmin, Route 66, you name them).

BTW Tomtom and Garmin do not need the internet or a plan to work. TomTom on my Touch Pro2 works even without a sim card in.

Dumb question: does the mobile have to be on a plan for the GPS part to work?

It sounds like the first company to create a great GPS with a simple phone in it wins. Bugger the camera.

the cheapest mobile on the market with gps is:
    SonyEricsson z750i
    (Blue Tick), Next-G

An unlock and flash will help remove the shovelware. Also, go to hidden menu and clear assistance data. Initially needs to download almanac ~ 10 mins in very clear sky, then good 4eva. good inside car, also.

Yes, advertisement says GPS:no, check Sony Developer website.

Are there any phones that have half way decent gps systems in them? I have a Nokia n95, and a O2 orbit. They both take about 10 minute to get a signal. These phones are kind of old. I hope technology has improved since 2yrs ago. I am hoping for something that can get a signal in less than 1 minute. I use gps for walking mostly.

This whole website just talks about negatives...pretty useless without the positives.

    We also want positives!!!!
