Best high-definition camcorders

By Derek Fung on 13 November 2009

High-def camcorders, while not exactly cheap, are now more affordable then ever. CNET Australia picks a few that offer the best compromise between image quality and price.

High-def recording chews up space, a lot of space — think of the Cookie Monster being let loose in an Arnott's factory — and that's why one of our picks is the Sony Handycam HDR-XR200V. But the XR200V isn't just another generic body with acres of hard-disk space, it's also the cheapest camera in Sony's line-up to feature the company's active image stabilisation system that not only smooths out most hand judders, but also makes walk and shoot videos actually watchable.

The Canon Legria HF20 shows how affordable flash memory has become in the last few years. Its manageable size, lightweight and sufficient storage make it a great throw-in-the-bag option.

Lastly, out of left field, is the ultimate option for the scrooges amongst us. Flip MinoHD users will have to give up some necessities, such as image stabilisation and optical zoom, but gain passable high-definition footage, pocketability and a low, low entry price.

It's the active image stabilisation system that finally makes shooting lengthy handheld movies or on-the-go videos a viable option, which elevates this camera from average to good.

Obviously the editor forgot about the JVC camcorders this year. I mean the GZ-HD300/320 has the largest optical zoom, largest size cmos sensor of that price range point ,highest quality bit rate and at a better price. It has also had some great reviews. Take a look at camcorder info, they claim its colour accuracy is excellent. Do what I did and see for yourself in a store. I have the GZ-HD320 in black. Very nice.

You have a good staff but I can not afford them since I am living in where it seems not possible to get them at this price.
