It might be hard to imagine the world without tablets, but it's only been three years since Apple released the original iPad, reinvigorating the tablet market beyond all expectations.

Since then, we've seen the rise and fall of a number of brands all trying to capture the same magic that Apple managed with the iPad.

In truth, there are a lot of great tablets for both Android and Windows, along with a few surprises, such as the Kindle tablets from Amazon.

Windows tablets, it should be noted, tend towards the "hybrid", with keyboard docks often being a standard part of the experience. This is changing a little with the rise of the 8-inch tablets for Windows, but there aren't too many of those on the market in Australia at the moment.

So if you're looking for a tablet experience that isn't iOS based, here are a few options in different operating systems and form factors that we think are worth putting on your shortlist.
