Best video-game songs of all time

Over the years, there have been many amazing tracks written for video games, whether it be a catchy 8-bit loop or a soaring operatic tear-jerker. We've compiled a list of some of the most interesting and striking video-game tracks we've ever heard.

What's your favourite? Or have we missed a true classic? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below. Please note our list is in no particular order of awesomeness.

Xenogears "The Treasure Which Cannot Be Stolen", Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse "Deja Vu (Vampire Killer)", Final Fantasy 6 "Forever Rachel", Final Fantasy 6 final boss music (starting with the first esperoid), Final Fantasy X-2 "Eternity: Memory of Lightwaves", Assassin's Creed "Ezio's Family", Dragon Age: Origins "Leliana's Song" and "I am the One", World of Warcraft "Lament of the Highborne"... I could name so many more. I agree with some of what's on this list, but over half of it is just blah. The songs I named stuck in my head for months after playing them. Some of these songs I can play in my head vividly over two decades later (Deja Vu, since Castlevania 3 was released in 1989, or approx. 23 years ago now). That is the sign of a great song.

I forgot to add Lagoon - Intro theme and boss battle theme (One of the first games for SNES, pretty obscure), and Chrono Cross "The Unstolen Jewel". Try all these on for size, and look them up on youtube. You will be adding them to your Ipod collection soon, like I already have.

Wizball. Gotta have Wizball...and Parallax.
Fallout 3 is fantastic too. Post-apocalyptic ambience...delish.

I have fond memories of Splash Wave on the old Sega Outrun arcade machine!

Ahh Michelle, as Ringo's granddaughter I thought you'd do a little better with your musical selection! You forgot the pure awesomeness of Red Dead Redemption.

Jose Gonzalez wrote 'far away' for it (brilliant), Jamie Lidell came up with 'Compass' (also brilliant) and then Ashtar Command contributed the incredible closing theme, 'Dead Man's Gun'. That one would bring a tear to a glass eye.

Oh dear - so many brilliant tracks have been missed! :-)

Nothing from the soundtracks of VVVVVV, Infamous, World of Goo or any of the Metroid series - I suggest anyone interested who hasn't played through these titles gets busy on YouTube,

I think every song in MGS 4 should be on this list; not only were they awesome but they were well placed amongst the situations.
