Ahead of the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare will be releasing highly detailed character kits free of charge to help you design your cosplay.

Cosplayers, it can't be denied, put in a lot of work dressing as their favourite characters; to varying degrees of success, to be sure, but even throwing together the right elements can take quite some time to source. In many cases, they have to scour the web for reference material to make sure they're getting everything just right.

To help fans — not just cosplayers, but fan artists, illustrators and writers — BioWare has announced that it will be releasing kits detailing characters and their costumes from Dragon Age: Inquisition, due out in Q3 2014. For a long time, the team at BioWare has delighted over fan creations, even going so far as to start designing costumes with more pockets so that cosplayers can hide their phones and wallets, wrote Bioware community manager Jessica Merizan.

"It's with great pleasure that I announce an initiative that has been a long time in development, a project of passion for quite a few departments within BioWare," Merizan said. "We want to give fan artists — cosplayers, illustrators, painters, writers, cake decorators, everyone — access to detailed, descriptive, high resolution character designs before the game is released. These will be distributed so you can have them available online or print them out and keep in your garage, workshop, sewing room or creative space to reference."

The first character kit to be released is Morrigan's ball gown. Over two pages, it shows detailed images of fabrics, textures, accessories, hair style and fabric drape as well as information about the choices the design team made about the costume.

It is designed to be printed out on standard A4 paper, but if you need a closer look, BioWare has also included higher-resolution reference images in the blog post.

And Morrigan is just the beginning.

"Please keep an eye out for new Dragon Age: Inquisition Character Kits in the coming weeks and months," Merizan said. "You'll see new and familiar faces that I hope create discussion and curiosity about what is yet to come, just like our demos do. If there's anything you'd like us to include in the Kits, let us know!"

You can download the Morrigan character kit from the BioWare blog.
