Upside
You've got to hand it to Bose - they consistently come up with great looking designs for their gear, and their new 3.2.1 GS DVD Home Entertainment System is no different. The GS is made up of two Bose Gemstone speakers, an Acoustimass Bass Module and a Media Centre - or in non-Bose speak, that's two speakers, a subwoofer and a DVD player.

In typical Bose fashion, the two Gemstone speakers are quite compact (and are screaming to be wall mounted), measuring in at only 64 x 140 x 105mm, and weighing less than half a kilogram. The Acoustimass is slightly smaller than typical subwoofer size at 367 x 222 x 485mm. Unfortunately, Bose don't give out any other specs (such as power ratings for the speakers) so it's difficult to tell how they'll stack up against other systems. Our experience in the past though is that despite their petiteness, the tiny Bose speakers can pump out a lot of volume. Bose claims this 2.1 speaker set-up can also recreate a full 5.1 system, but we'll have to wait for our full review before we can vouch for it.

The Media Centre incorporates a progressive scan DVD/CD player and an AM/FM tuner. Once again hard specs are pretty difficult to come by, but it does feature a composite, S-Video and component output, as well as three audio inputs (three analog, three coaxial digital, one optical digital) and two video pass-through inputs (composite and S-video). This main unit is 83 x 349 x 254mm and weighs in at three kilos. The entire system comes in a graphite grey finish.

Bose is also crowing that the 3.2.1 GS is a cinch to install and operate. All it needs is three wires to plug in (and the power cord), and you're away. A set-up DVD is also included to make the whole process easier. This GS system also features the company's proprietary Bose link circuitry, which means it can be plugged in as part of a whole house music and video system using the Bose Lifestyle 38 or 48 systems.

Downside
Bose has always been a premium brand, and the AU$2399 asking price for this 2.1 home theatre system is par for the course. You also really have to trust in the truck loads of proprietary technology Bose has packed into its products to buy this without a decent test run, since it's hard to compare this with other systems without more specs information from the company. And keep that word 'proprietary' in mind - Bose systems really only work with other Bose systems, so don't expect to be able to mix and match any other manufacturer's gear if you decide on expanding your home theatre kit anytime soon.

Overall
We can't wait to get our hands on this system for a full test run. It's large asking price means the 3.2.1 GS is definitely aimed upmarket, but Bose usually makes that price difference worthwhile.

The Good:damn...the sound is unreal

The Bad:be careful about the voltage for the acoustimass, it can blow up at any time

the *bass* at the beginning was not that great, i went in the sound system settings and find out that i can increase/decrease the level of bass and at the same time the level of trebles; after that *damn... the sound was astonishingly good* if you want a good sound think about quality

The Good:Excellent audio reproduction.
Plays MP3 CDs very easily.
Almost surround sound.
Sounds great with iPods.

The Bad:Plays DVDs erratically.
Doesn't replace surround sound.
Too expensive.
No HDMI output.

Have bought this system 3 months ago and have swapped the control unit 1 week after the initial purchase. The audio is the usual great Bose sound for both music and movies. Speaker placement is essential but once in place can project good left right separation with excellent clarity, base and volume with no distortion. This unit fails in the video reproduction, the DVD has to be of good quality otherwise the unit will not play it properly. Also the quality of the video is noticeably poorer that the Samsung DVD player connected via HDMI to the LCD HD TV. Don't expect surround sound either but the channel separation does feel like it is wider than normal giving extra depth to the movie audio. Overall I don't recommend this unit without a good DVD player. Bose really need to concentrate on a solid DVD player with HDMI output.

The Good:DVD runs good.
Sound quality is average.
Easy functions.

The Bad:Not efficient and reliable functions and performance.

Average performance with its 3 to 5 speakers. My friend have Bose GS DVD Home Entertainment System. Looks good but in performance nothing special in it.

The Good:The ability to store songs and have them programmed to play as you like is great. Not unlike that provided by an I Pod conected to a home system.

The Bad:We have been having problems with DVD's freezing during play and having to reset the system by unplugging the system. A patch was sent to correct this; this helped for a short while. Now the system has frozen up to 5 times while watching a movie. It has also started to freeze while playing CD's. The latest highlight is the system now displays Format not supported for all DVD's.

The bose system met the criteria expected for loading songs and the sound we needed for the space we have. But this entertainment system has caused more frustration than entertainment. I always supported Bose from the first time I heard a set of Bose 901's but since we have purchased this system we would not recommend anyone purchase a bose system for anything other than sound. Stick to the speakers.

The Good:Awesome sound and surround sound for a 3 speaker system. Great looks and sleek design.

The Bad:No HDMI output.

I just bough the system and you have to understand that its a 3 speaker system and not a surround sound system with 5 + speakers. But it peeformed the way I had experienced it in the store and also in the BOSE demo rooms.

The Good:Compact, good picture quality, spectacular sound for both home theatre & cds.Simple to operate

The Bad:No hdmi..does not come as standard multizone dvd player

321 gsx..Fantastic system for both cds/dvds! For users experiencing a 2-5/10 rating(which was also my initial response) could it be due to incorrect speaker placement/treble-bass balance
