Bose Companion 5

Six hundred dollars is a lot to spend on PC speakers, but that said, this three-piece speaker system is one of the more distinct-looking and attractively designed PC speaker packages we've seen -- and it sounds pretty good, too.

The Companion 5 system includes Bose's proprietary TruSpace surround processing circuitry, which delivers a fairly convincing faux surround-sound experience from only three speakers (you get two satellites, which sit on your desk, and one "hideway" Acoustimass module -- a.k.a. subwoofer -- that sits on the floor and is the about the size of most similar PC speaker subs). Bose expects the system to appeal to those who watch movies and play games in a home-office environment, but don't want to set up surround speakers.

Bose prides the Companion 5 on its easy setup -- it requires you to only plug the USB connector into your computer and match up the colour-coded speaker wire. There's also a small pod control (a little smaller than a hockey puck) that sits on your desk and has a headphone jack and an input for your iPod or other MP3 player.

The AU$599 system is designed for use with both PC and Macs, though for best performance, Bose recommends Windows XP or later for PC users and OS X 10.4.6 or later for Mac users. Previous Bose PC speakers -- the Companion 2 and Companion 3 -- will remain in the lineup, but get a makeover that more closely matches the forthcoming flagship model.

The Good:sound quality at low volume

The Bad:sound quality at high volume

movies/gaming sounds amazing, music however is only good at low volume, at high volume the sub cant keep up with the satellites, if you like your music loud, purchase something with a higher powered sub

The Good:Simplicity, Clear and Crisp Sound.

The Bad:Bass not deep enough, midrange lacks a bit of clarity

Great on music and movies! I've been hunting for a small and simple good quality computer speakers and finally landed on this. Very happy with it and definately will recommend to friends who are not caught up with the negative reviews on the brand. Check out the sound of the trumpet and strings produced by these speakers.

The Good:Compact, Bass, Clear

The Bad:Price, Remote.

The Bose Companion 5 is a fairly good system if your looking for middle volume but the sub woofer won't really show to much grunt. the hockey puck remote will give some serious headaches if you place it to far away from your work desk with the auto off system. But all round the Bose Companion 5 is a fairly decent system for home office, video, gaming or music.

The Good:Low space design, setup is easy, nice control, distinct clarity, movies really sound great

The Bad:as all of us said, PRICE !! also, virtualization without USB connection is not possible. Can not get the 100% quality output with mp3 players or dvd players

TruSpace really delivers the spacious sound..unlike other speakers, it virtually creats the surround sound. left-right sounds seems to be coming from far away, as if the speakers are separated more than 10 ft away, but actually they are nt. Just rush to any Bose store for the demo. Just be fooled with the surround that it creates

these speakers cost 399 in the US.
why do we need to pay 599 in AUST?

badd rating due to price.
sound is average at this price. (but would be good at a 199 price mark - which is what it should be...)

The Good:Truly clear and very convincing surround sound.

The Bad:Price perhaps but I can forgive.

Loved 'em but I can't get the hockey puck remote control to work properly with my sony vaio. i wonder also if the set up should different fro that descibed in the manual which only refers to XP when I have Vista. Nonetheless, these speakers really are very good even if I may not be getting the full benefit as yet - or maybe I am - who knows? I've been used to the in-built speakers so anything's better, right!?
