Sitting on the dock
Sony bundles docks with all its SR series models. Though many of the connectors also appear on the body of the camcorder, the USB port for downloading video only lives on the dock.

An uninspiring entrant in Sony's HD camcorder lineup. The Sony Handycam HDR-SR5's video quality and performance simply don't deliver for the price.
A great high-def camcorder if you intend to carry it in your handbag. If you've got a little more space, though, plump for a hard-disk model.
The Sony Handycam HDR-UX1 is a very nice camcorder; unfortunately, its myriad compatibility issues make it almost impossible to recommend over other similar models.
Sony's Handycam DCR-SR80 is a respectable hard-drive-based camcorder if you don't mind its touchscreen interface.
The cool factor of waterproof gadgets is high, even when there's a subsequent trade-off in performance. Anyone going any deeper than snorkel depth will need to look elsewhere, but at least the price reflects the compromises made for that cheerily tough exterior.
The Sony Handycam DCR-SR45 has a good design and reasonable feature set for its price, but the video quality doesn't measure up to the rest of the package.
Canon's first flash-based camcorder, the Canon HF10, delivers excellent HD video quality and performance in a tiny package.
Samsung VP-HMX10 Progressive HD Camcorder
The HMX10 makes a decent entry-level HD camcorder — with an awful lot of limitations.
This year's high-def hybrid camcorder from Panasonic is of the much more useful SD card/hard-disk variety. There's 60GB of on-board storage and 1080p recording at 25fps.
