Canon DC330

Canon just announced at CES three new standard-definition DVD camcorders, the latest in the company's DC-series of camcorders.

Replacing the DC210, the Canon DC310 uses a 680,000-pixel CCD, a 41x optical zoom lens, and a 2.7-inch wide-screen LCD. Canon's Ultra-fast QuickStart claims a start-up time of less than 0.7 seconds, as well as being able to put the camera into standby mode and shut it off automatically to preserve battery-life.

The DC320 bumps up its sensor to a full megapixel and the lens to 48. Finally, the DC330 adds a USB 2.0 jack and a remote control.

Canon built the DC330's remote sensor into the pivoting screen instead of the body, so you can use the remote in front, behind, or next to the camcorder, depending on the screen's position. All three camcorders include LCD video lights and SDHC card slots for recording still photos. Extended recording time with dual layer DVD is available in the DC310.

The DC310, DC320, and DC330 ship in the US in March, with respective suggested price tags of US$350, US$370, and US$380.

So far, only the DC310 has been announced in Australia with a local release slated for March. It is expected to retail for AU$599.

    • Canon HG21

      Canon HG21

Bedecked in black, the HG21 is Canon's top dog, second-gen, high-def, hard-disk camcorder. It features 12x optical zoom, a CMOS sensor, optical image stabilisation and an electronic viewfinder.

    • Canon HG20

      Canon HG20

Canon's rapid ascent up the high-def, hard-disk camcorder totem pole continues with the HG20 and HG21 twins. Both share optical image stabilisation, 12x optical zoom and a CMOS sensor. The HG20 comes with a smaller 60GB hard-disk and misses out on a viewfinder.

    • Canon HF11

      Canon HF11

It might not fit every hand, but the results it provides are excellent whether you're a manual fiddler or just want quick and easy automatic filming capabilities.

      JVC Everio GZ-MS100

The JVC Everio GZ-MS100 is an average budget SD-card-based camcorder that's more attractive for its small design and relatively average video quality than its unique interface and one-touch uploads to YouTube.

If you don't want to, need to, or simply can't shell out a couple hundred dollars more for an HD camcorder, the Sony Handycam DCR-SR85 delivers decent SD video and copious recording time.
