The Canon DC40 definitely deserves a spot on your short list of DVD camcorders.

Brilliant Camcorder.
Took on overseas holidays, school play etc and it hasn't failed us yet.
Worth every cent, and for those of you who wear glasses it's not all doom and gloom, there is a small"switch" that lets you adjust the view-finder for your eyes that works very well.

fun and easy to use
great stills
the list goes on... - Bad: poor auto image modes
