Canon EOS 400D

The Canon 400D remains a very good first dSLR, with a balance of automatic, semi-automatic and manual controls to progress through as your creative photography skills improve.

    I am a beginner but this camera makes me look like a pro. This camera is just unbelieveable. A must for any photographer or someone wanting to take some awesome shots

    Provides excellent images, sharp and colour-true. I'm happy with the pourchase. Note: pay a little extra for 2GB or 4GB cards.When you shoot RAW + JPG, cards fill up fast.

    • Good: Crisp lenses -- but I paid extra to avoid the kit ones. I gather this was good luck. Strong body.
    • Bad: Bloody dreadful user's guide; unusual constraints in some shooting modes. The carry-around quick guide to too large and dies in the pocket. No spot metering -- amazing. Irritating spherical-top buttons onthe back, fingers slip off mine.

    The backlit LCD panel is great, nice and bright, doesn't seem to affect battery life (have only once triggered a battery replacement after in excess of 700 photos). So far have had to clean the 400D sensor only once in 6 months of use, compared to almost every week for the 5D (big sensor more dust!). The AF is now great compared to 350D, and little different from the 5D, in fact I prefer the LCD autofocus-point setting system on the 400D. Conclusion the 400D is great.. and I still love the small body. We used to pay a premium for small! Finally I set the exposure compensation to -1/3 EV to reduce sky blowouts, I find the camera default exposure a little bright.
