Canon FS100

Think of the FS100 as an FS11 but without the latter's 16GB of internal memory. You still get a 2.7-inch flip-out LCD screen and 45x zoom, though.

It's really a great little unit. Having experience with the old bulky VHS cameras, it's so much more convenient with the SD cards. Video quality very good in bright light, a bit better than VHS (this is sill SD, mind you), which unfortunately drops in in indoor lighting (typical red/yellow graining) - LED light does not help here. But that's really the only weak point of this camera. Having done some research it's hard to find a camcorder in that price range with significantly better indoor video quality.
I've pointed all the major pros/cons here. It does take pictures but that's the last resort, really (1 MPX only). All in all, great unit which would have deserved 10 rating from me if not for the poor indoor lighting.- Good: - very good video quality in bright light
- fantastic ease of use, great layout of buttons, clear menu, and this little joystick on the LCD screen, well done
- very small but still manageable in your hands
- decent auto focus
- great battery life (up to 3hrs!)
- very good mic
- quiet and responsive - Bad: - pretty poor indoor video quality (although graining not really visible on a SD TV set)
- no image stabiliser
- included video editing software could not have been poorer
- Good: - very good video quality in bright light
