Canon Pixma MX850

The Canon PIMXA is a solid office performer with a raft of features; just don't expect top quality photograph printing.

    • Good: slow, mediocre printing - now has died at 15 months
    • Bad: at 15 months of age needs AU $280 repair

First Canon product - photo printing always dreadful, document printing low average, slow, now needs new print headn and just out of warrantee - Canon crap - won't touch another of their printers

    • Good: Price, MUCH better than HP all-in-one software bloatware!! Just works.
    • Bad: Just got it but none yet

Had the predecessor (MP830) for about 3 years and when time to upgrade didn't even consider any other options. It does everything my home office needs. Ethernet works great. Love the ability to print direct to CD/DVD. It has been one of the least hassle technology purchases I've made.
Would never consider a similar HP as I've known many people who have had reliability issues. Also I absolutely HATE the bloatware with the HP.

    • Good: Very few. We still have the printer and it prints but thats about it.
    • Bad: - Ethernet doesnt work (and by Canon's own admission)
      - Scan quality is very poor
      - Print quality is only 'adequate' but essentially substandard.
      - Very difficult to follow set up instructions for the more advanced features.

As typical with new printers today, there are too many bells and whistles and therefore, too many things that can go wrong. The Ethernet doesnt work. I telephoned Canon here in Sydney and thay actually acknowledged that they were receiving a number of complaints. After 2 hours trying to work through we just gave up and bought a second printer. Additionally, the print quality of this printer (and many others produced today) is substandard. I have an old 2003 HP 1210 that would cost $10 second hand today. Although very slow with printing, the quality is far far superior to this Canon Printer and a new HP printer we bought. The sales people in Harvey Norman were shocked when I went back to them and asked them (a) if they ever test the printers from the manufacturers before they buy a wholesale lot (they said no) and (b) to choose which print came from the 2008 printer and which from the cheap 2003 printer (they chose the 2003 printer both times).

    • Good: Ethernet Connection
Auto Duplex Scanning and Printing in Colour and Black and White
Scan and select which computer to push it to
    • Bad: haven't found any yet

This really is the Multifunction with everything, and at a bargain price compared to what you'd pay for all this only a couple of years ago!

    • Good: Consumerables are reasonably priced and flexible to change where a particular cartridge runs empty.
    • Bad: Initial print or scan could be faster, but following pages were quick enough.
Once or twice whilst scanning, I have had to re-boot the pc too clear a hung operation, although I haven't traced the source of this problem to either the MX-850, the included software, or the Vista operating system.

Set-up was simple and installed on 2 pcs on a simple LAN with the Ethernet option in under 1 hour. All functions have worked 1st time and every time. This printer is a true multi-function printer with the inclusion of the fax. I have only used via a LAN and cannot comment on the USB operation. I have only used HP or Canon printers prior to this, however the MX-850 has been one of my best out-of-the box experience ever.
