Limousine wars: Chrysler versus Maybach

At the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, there are two convertible limosuine concepts: one from Maybach and the other from Chrysler. We pit them head-to-head.

The cars, the Chrysler 300C Hollywood and the Maybach Landaulet Study, featured some similar characteristics, which left us wondering if Chrysler walked off with some Maybach plans when it got sold off by Daimler. After looking at both cars, we decided to pit them head-to-head in a fantasy concept car battle.

Maybach Landaulet Study (top) and Chrysler 300C Hollywood (bottom)

Round 1: Prestige
To start off, Maybach is an extreme luxury brand owned by Daimler, while Chrysler isn't -- not even the most ardent patriot would call it a luxury brand. So while Maybach didn't manage to sell a single car in Australia last year, it wins this round.

Round 2: Power
The Chrysler is powered by a 2.7-litre V6, while the Maybach has a 6-litre V12. Although we question the need for that much power in a chauffeur-driven car, the second round goes to the Maybach just because it has more than double the engine of the 300C Hollywood.

Round 3: Design
What really got us comparing these two cars was the fact that they're both convertibles. The Maybach has a retractable soft top over the back, so well-heeled occupants can enjoy the sun, while the 300C Hollywood only leaves the chauffeur and front passenger uncovered. Only the nouveau riche would be so crass as to leave the help out in the rain, so the Maybach wins the third round.

Round 4: Carrying capacity
We also noticed that the back of the 300C Hollywood had three bottles of champagne nestled in its centre console, more than the single bottle in back of the Maybach. We would have easily given the round to the 300C Hollywood, but then we noticed that the single bottle in the Maybach was Veuve Clicquot, one of our favourites, so we'll call it even on the champagne front.

Conclusion
If there was a round for value, we might have given it to the 300C Hollywood -- but both cars are concepts and, as such, are not priced. So, as we expected, our analysis has given the Maybach Landaulet Study an easy win.

You are wrong about the Chrysler 300C with a 2.7L V6, that car has a 5.7L Hemi V8 with MDS, ask the driver which car would be easier to fix or find parts for it incase of an emergency!

For those craving a luxury four-wheel drive with an emphasis on luxury rather than cornering elan, then the RX400h is a good choice. It's about as much four-wheel drive as many of us will ever need, and its fuel thrift is pleasing too.
