Could the FT-HS be Toyota's next Supra?

It's been six years since the last Toyota Supra rolled off the line, but the FT-HS hybrid coupe concept may -- and, we stress, may -- mean that there's a new Supra in the works.

The crisply creased FT-HS is styled unlike any other production Toyota. Given the fairly unassuming nature of most Toyotas, that's no bad thing, although this hybrid coupe concept did make us think of Toyota's close-to-production iQ super-mini.

With its front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration and hybrid drivetrain, Toyota is hoping to get the best of both worlds -- performance with a measure of frugality, although no fuel economy figures are quoted.

There's a 3.5-litre V6 under the bonnet, which is mated to an electric motor and battery pack. A similar configuration is used in the Lexus GS450h and produces 254kW in total, although Toyota says it's aiming for 300kW on the FT-HS. This should be good for a sub-four second 0 to 100km/h sprint time.

Other than that, Toyota isn't being too specific about other technical details at the moment.

For those craving a luxury four-wheel drive with an emphasis on luxury rather than cornering elan, then the RX400h is a good choice. It's about as much four-wheel drive as many of us will ever need, and its fuel thrift is pleasing too.

The GT Sport TSI shape-shifts easily between a relaxed cruiser and inconspicuous hot-hatch, and the 1.4-litre Twincharger engine is an engineering marvel. But the GTI is just five grand more. Decisions, decisions.
