Earlier this week in San Francisco, Volkswagen showed off its fourth generation fuel-cell research vehicle, based around Volkswagen's new Tiguan mini-4WD. Hydrogen is used to create electricity, which powers the car's electric drive motor. There's also a lithium-ion battery pack for extra electricity storage.

A new model, a new platform
The previous two generations of Volkswagen's HyMotion fuel-cell research vehicles were built on its Touran minivan platform. Volkswagen has just introduced the Tiguan crossover vehicle and, so, chose to use this model to showcase its latest fuel-cell technology.
