D-Link RangeBooster N 650 ADSL2+ Router (DSL-2740B)

By Michael Palamountain on 30 April 2008

The DSL-2740B is a modem and router that offers a good balance between price and features, with a slightly shaky performance.

    • Good: Sharing internet works, wireless works, networking works
    • Bad: Still internet behaviour is erratic. Some pages don't load properly or slow.

    Amendment to my previous review.

Have found solution to wireless connection to smart phone. My smart phone works only on wireless 11b/g. The box by default is set to mixed wireless mode of 11b/g/n. Due to this, my phone can't connect due to interference from wireless 11n. I have to log into modem/router to change the wireless settings to mixed mode of 11b & g only.

As for network, XP machine needed the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol to see Vista machine on the network. This was previously installed when I had my old Netcomm modem/router. Apparently, if I install new modem/router, I need to reinstall the LLTD protocol. Now it's working.

I find internet connection is still erratic. Some pages took longer to load or when refreshing, took a long time or got stuck.

Should have replaced my damaged Netcomm with the same one instead of this box.

    • Good: Great for internet sharing because of the 4 ports Ethernet
    • Bad: Wireless is erratic. Phone can't find wireless signal. Unable to share printer, don't let my computers see other.

After few hours of use, hate it. The only good point is the 4 port Ethernet which allowed me to share my internet connection between two PCs - Vista & XP machines. Wireless is useless. Even after setting WPA key, signal very erratic. Sometimes my smart phone can discover signal, but most of the time it can't and also drop out even if I am sitting next to the router! Also, it does not remember my phone. Everytime I need to use internet on my phone, I need to rediscover wireless signal and MUST reenter WPA key! My previous Netcomm router only made me did it once on the first time and it remembers my phone, no need to rediscover signal, no need to retype WPA key. As for networking, also not working. I have Vista & XP machines and know very well I need to align to same network name to make them see each other but even after doing this, no network detected. Can't share files between both PCs and can't share printer! My Netcomm NB6PlusW can do this and all successful the first time with no hick-ups and no drame.

This piece of junk is a waste of money and my time.

    • Good: - Appeared fast and reliable in the first hour.

      - Looks nice.
    • Bad: - Erratic internet behaviour - pages fail to load frequently.

      - No auto firmware updates - you have to lift heaven and earth to find these 'updates' too.

      - Almost mandatory connection manager which is very inneficient - causes problems with windows wireless manager.

      - Does poorly in direct ping tests.

      - Slow direct-interface

      - ADSL speeds appeared to be slower by about 2-3Mbit compared to my previous router with various bouts of speeds as low as 20Kb/s ( on an 8mbit connection ).

      - 30 minute drive back to the store...

(All tests conducted with a RangeBooster N%u2122 650 Desktop Adapter and Belkin Wireless N adapter at medium, short and long range)

Pretty things are not always sturdy. I am very disappointed with this product and cannot recommend it any lower...

    • Good: Highly competitive pricing.
      Easy to install.
      Excellent range.
    • Bad: Nothing.

I used this router for my home based network. Its very fast and efficient. No any jurk in its way. Because of i use cingular wireless network so wireless internet service is very fast in it. We use wireless keyboard some times in network so they don't reflect in other ip. Works perfect.

    • Good: Good features
      Easy Set-Up
Good Range (May depend on your house / office)
      Pretty Light!
      Cheapish!
    • Bad: For some reason when i hook my PS3 into the Ethernet or over the wireless it won't let it work even if I've put the key in. (may just be a software update or I've put my settings wrong, i don't know)..

      Easy to break..

    I like this router.
It is good for home or office use it has all the features you need.
