Dark Crystal 2: meet the makers

By Ty Pendlebury on 30 July 2010

Jim Henson’s children’s movie The Dark Crystal has a special place in the hearts of children and adults alike.

CNET Australia recently spoke to the directors charged with the task of making a follow-up: Australians Michael and Peter Spierig.

The two were in town promoting the release of their latest film, Daybreakers, on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s a vampire movie with a twist and stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill.

In the video, the brothers discuss the pressures of making the Power of the Dark Crystal — the follow-up of a highly-regarded film — and talk about the challenges of shooting it in 3D.

The twins also discuss their love for gadgets and the iPad, and even telling us — off-camera unfortunately — that they plan to write their scripts on the device, as well as use it for storyboards.

In the second video, the directors talk about the future of 3D and whether consumer-level 3D camcorders will ever take off.
