Dell Streak: hands on

About The Author

Craig was sucked into the endless vortex of tech at an early age, only to be spat back out babbling things like "phase-locked-loop crystal oscillators!". Mostly this receives a pat on the head from the listener, followed closely by a question about what laptop they should buy.

Between the onslaught of large-screen smartphones and the emergence of tablets, we're being asked as consumers to answer a question the manufacturers themselves seem unable to answer definitively: how big do we want our mobile screens? Dell has answered that question with a 5-inch display on the Dell Streak and brought it into the CNET Australia office to let us see for ourselves.

The Streak has just been launched in the UK and will soon see the inside of phone stores in the US. Dell can't yet commit to a release date in Australia, though we got the distinct impression that several Aussie telcos could be interested in the Streak and we could see it down under sooner rather than later.

Want one! Screen size more to my liking than other smart phones, and with lots of android apps this seems to be a winner for my needs.

This Dell Streak looks like a very versatile piece of kit that can be used as a phone,Web browser and Car GPS.Like the idea of the docking station and headset for music and games. It would have come preinstalled with Android 2.2

but u can just put in a 32GB sd card which weighs next to nothing

Only 1GB of internal memory!! That explains why its so light. Other smartphones seem to have a bit more memory to store those apps, etc.

I love a huge screen and all, but I think this is a little bit too big. I saw a video, and in my opinion, it looks funny when held up against the your face.
I think the HTC HD2 has the perfect huge screen. That's what I think anyway.

@simon It does have a 3.5mm head phone jack on the device, near the volume rocker

Why isnt the 3.5mm socket on the device itself?

I believe that there is a 3.5mm input on the phone. The 3.5mm input on the dock is for just that - docking the device. Leave your dock in your home entertainment system area, say, and then listen to your tunes through much higher quality external speakers.
