Dell UltraSharp U2410 unboxing

By Craig Simms on 19 August 2009

Update: Our review is here.

Dell's U2410 caused quite a stir recently, being an H-IPS-based 24-inch panel.

Typically, 24-inch monitors have been relegated to VA technology (good colour, decent viewing angles, mid-level price), although in the past few years TN-based (lower colour quality, horrific vertical viewing angles, OK horizontal viewing angles) have crept into the lower-price range. IPS monitors have better colour and better viewing angles, but tend to come at a price increase. This is why the U2410 is a bit special — it'll be going on sale for only AU$899, and should be available now.

Speeds and feeds? 1920x1200 resolution, 400cd/m² brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio (with a ridiculous 80,000:1 claimed dynamic), 178° viewing angle. Colour claims are 110 per cent CIE 1976, 96 per cent AdobeRGB, 100 per cent sRGB and 1.07 billion colours.

What else do we know? Well, we know it just arrived in our office, so it's time to stop blathering and start unpacking! On to the pictures!

The box. The box. What's in the box? Why, it's pixellated joy.

This is an excellent article on how to unpack a monitor. Thank you, CNET. Now I can make an informed choice.

I agree with doigal about the CF cards. However I have the 2408WFP that has a CF reader as part of the card reader set and I dont use it much, the main reason being how much slower it is at reading my Sandisk Extreme III cards. I am looking at upgrading from to this as the 2408WFP's reds are way too bright they actually burn my eyes.

If CF was dying why then would every professional dSLR use CF as its main storage format? For a monitor that is directed at graphic professionals, naturally including photographers, this is a big backwards step. In two - three years then it would make sence but for now its just poor judgement.

I'm slightly peeved that Dell would have charged me $899 for the old 24" Ultrasharp 3 days before this new monitor was announced - why do Dell make it so hard to buy from them!? Looking forward to the reveiw on this new panel - just to see what I'm missing out on :-)

I've heard nothing about this monitor yet...really want to hear some details and some comparison to other IPS screens on the market!! Wouldn't want to touch a TN panel with a ten foot pole, and seems like manufacturers are phasing out 1920x1200 in favour of 1920x1080...so a 1920x1200 IPS is a good prospect! :-)

Looking forward to the review. I've (mostly) been a fan of Dell's previous 24" VA monitors and a I absolutely LOVE my 2209WA 22" IPS monitor.

This isn't the review John, just the unboxing. The review will come soon :)

Just for future reviews if you take the time to unbox a new device like a monitor try plugging it in commenting on the performance of the device. eg performance when playing videos, games, office apps (was it too bright to look at all day) and adobe cs.
