I'm in the market for a new Webcam. I primarily chat using Yahoo Messenger and was wondering what the best Webcam would be.

For video messaging, you want a Webcam that can display accurate, high-quality images in both light and dark environments. The Logitech and Creative Webcams we've looked at lately all give adequate low-light performance and display accurate colours and smooth images, which make for quality video IM conversations.
However, video quality also depends on the IM client you're using. We've had the best and most consistent video quality using MSN Messenger 7. The images look smooth and clear, and you can view them full-screen. Yahoo Messenger's video IM capabilities are hit-or-miss. If users on both ends of the conversation are using broadband Internet access and have no firewalls, you'll be able to use their Super option, which produces smooth and clear video. However, in most of our tests with Yahoo's video IM, the Super button has been greyed out, resulting in very, very choppy and grainy video.

You could use your phone as a webcam with help of applications like Mobiola Web Camera.

I have the Logitech Communicate STX - it is ok, but the picture quality doesn't compare much to the iSight on my Macbook.

Don't get the MS life cams... they're terrible! There's a factory defect with the microphones (mine stopped working properly and gave terrible feedback halfway through my first chat). Of course there hasn't been a recall issued although I've read about this problem all over the Internet.

I have a MS LifeCam, it has fair video but there's muffled audio and a loud buzz that won't go away, you can google lifecam buzz to see it's not an isolated problem. I would say Microsoft needs to stick to OS and browers but Vista and the new IE are junk also. DON"T GET LIFECAM, you have been warned.
