Need to get a bunch of data from your PC to your MP3 player real fast? You may be interested to know that the newest version of USB will be 10 times faster.
The new standard, which is expected to be finalised in mid-2008, will enable speeds of 5Gbps which is almost twice the speed of FireWire. This will enable an MP3 player to slurp about 27GB of songs off your computer in about a minute, according to its developers.
Lars Giusti of Microsoft (one of the companies developing the standard) told us that the new plugs will be backwards compatible with USB 2.0, and that the standard will support optimised phone charging -- a concept not thought of when the existing standard was released.
Giusti said he expects devices based on USB 3.0 to be mainstream by 2010.
