Digital radio: All you need to know

By Randolph Ramsay and Ty Pendlebury on 06 August 2009

Forget about AM and FM, as digital radio (or DAB+) is the way of the future. It features interference-free transmissions, rewind and pause, and track info.

I love technology but to actually spend a small fortune on a digital radio - no thanks, plus most of these only have a single speaker - what a ripoff. Radio is not worthwhile listening to these days anyway. I think this new technology will be a big expensive flop, as I dont see people taking it up quickly, especially in the current financial landscape.

If I can pause and rewind digital radio, can I also (after pausing) fast forward digital radio? I'd like to skip not only the ads but also the frequent news bulletins. I don't need to be reminded of the news avery 15 minutes.

I live in Melbourne. With a digital radio, will I be able to tune into AM and FM radio stations in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth?

I can receve digital radio from brisbane at runaway bay the northen suburb of the gold coast and i don't have any problem with the rod antenna but i have a lot of problems picking up am and fm from brisbane even in brisbane in the western suburbs i have problems receving some am signals. the dab+ signal is vertical polarisation and anyone trying to receve dab+ with the vhf tv antenna in brisbane it doesn't work because they are hoasontal polarisation and there would have to be a dab+ antenna with its own coaxel cable not a splitter with a vhf tv antenna uhf may be ok.

Looks like I was setting it up the very night before full power. Handy reply from Digitalradionplus.

Digital radio services commenced high power broadcasts in Sydney today on 21
July. Please note that some interference testing will be underway for the
next week so powers may still be variable for that period. Please check
www.digitalradioplus.com.au for the latest updates regarding this matter.

I live 35km's North West Sydney, checked on the post code 2155 prior to buying all ok. Removed my bedside am/fm radio and put a $400+ new dab in its place. I get a reception signal number of around 60 during the day and nothing to 40 at night, 40 just cuts in and out and any less signal is silence? Just walking around the thing upsets it, thankfully I have internet radio via wifi on it.

Is the DAB+ signal in Sydney on some low power for a while? Read the book which basically tells me to go sleep in the garage if that gives a better reception. Any tips?

Can anyone explain what range digital radio channels (not the abc/sbs set top box ones) will have. I live 80 kms from Sydney and receive nearly all their FM and AM stations. Will the new digital stations travel that far???
