What is a memory card?
Memory cards are small devices (some no bigger than your thumbnail) that are used to store electronic data. Just like film is used to store photos and floppy disks are used to store information, memory cards can be used to store a wide variety of media.

SanDisk's Extreme III CompactFlash 8GB.

This can be anything (depending on the device) from photos, music, movies, games, documents, programs and more. And while cards come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are available for a variety of products, all memory cards do essentially the same thing -- store data.

Memory cards, also commonly known as flash memory cards, are essentially chips that allow users to write and rewrite data multiple times. Some of the key features of flash memory cards include their small size and the ability to retain data without a power supply. This allows them to fit into a variety of portable consumer devices.

What types of devices need memory cards?
Memory cards first took off as the storage medium of choice in photography, with digital cameras dispensing with film rolls to instead rely on the much smaller and cost effective memory cards. An increasing number of digital video cameras are also becoming memory card compatible.

Panasonic's Viera TX-32LX500M has a built-in SD card reader.

As well as digital cameras, memory cards are commonly used with many personal digital assistants (PDAs) as a medium for storing data. And as mobile phones become much more feature packed, memory cards are becoming the favoured method of storing information like photos, music and messages.

Memory cards are also making more frequent appearances in other consumer electronic devices such as televisions, portable game devices, printers, DVD recorders and more. Many new televisions now come with card slots which allow users to see any stored photos on a big screen, while some printers allow you to print directly from images stored on a card.

While you can easily swap cards from one product to another, it's important to remember that different devices take different types of memory cards. If you already have a device that takes a memory card and want to buy more gear, make sure your intended purchase can take the same type of card.

What are the different types of memory cards available?
There are six main types that you'll come across in the world of memory cards -- SD, MMC, Memory Stick, Compact Flash, xD Picture Card and SmartMedia.

Secure Digital (SD) is quickly becoming the most popular type in the world, and can be found in a large variety of devices across a wide variety of brands. Multimedia Cards (MMC) are another popular type, and are used in PDAs, cameras and phones. Memory Stick is a proprietary format developed by Sony, and as a result can be found mainly in Sony devices. Compact Flash is a standard specifically developed for digital cameras, while the xD Picture Card is another proprietary format (this time developed by Fujifilm and Olympus). SmartMedia is an older format which was popular a few years ago but has since waned due to its large physical size.

Devices will usually only take one variety of memory card - don't expect to be able to shove a Memory Stick into a camera that takes SD, for example. And in another potentially confusing twist for consumers, many of the more popular formats are coming out with their own sub-variants. SD, for example, also comes in miniSD and microSD (also known as TransFlash) forms, while Memory Sticks have the Memory Stick Pro Duo variants. While the underlying technology is the same, the size and form factor is vastly different in these variants -- you'll need an adaptor, for example, when trying to use the smaller Memory Stick Duo card in something that only takes normal Memory Sticks.

Can I use the same card on other devices?
The simple answer is yes, but with some caveats.

The HP iPaq 6965 has an expansion slot for miniSD.

As long as your different devices take the same type of card, you should be able to freely use the same memory unit in those different devices. If, for example, your PDA, mobile phone and laptop all take SD cards, then you'll be able to use the same SD card to store data, take pictures or transfer information.

You may not be able to access or use your stored data from one device to another, however. Individual devices may use a specific file structure when recording information onto a memory card, or they may use specific file format types. If a device is unable to browse a memory card's directory or cannot read a specific type of file format, then it won't be able to display or utilise something stored using a different device. Songs stored as MP3 files on a card, for example, can't be played on a device that doesn't have MP3 support.

How safe is the data stored on memory cards?
When it comes to the safety of your data, memory cards have some key advantages over other storage devices such as hard disks or CDs/DVDs. Memory cards are much more shockproof than other storage mediums. Since there are no moving parts in a memory card, they're much less prone to the movement damage which can occur in a normal hard drive.

They're also much less fragile than a CD/DVD -- the case of a memory card can easily take a scratch or two, while scratches on the underside of a CD or DVD will most often result in data loss. Since memory cards are physically so small, perhaps the greatest risk of data loss lies with losing the entire card itself, rather than by some other accident.

How do I transfer data from my memory card to my PC?
Most portable devices come with cables to link directly to a PC or laptop, allowing you to transfer any images or data stored on your memory card. If you don't have your device or cable with you, however, there are other alternatives.

Most new PCs and laptops are now being sold with built-in card readers. These allow you to slide your card directly into the computer, from which you can access any data stored on the card.

There are also stand alone card readers you can purchase. These card readers can usually read more than one type of card, which is handy if you've got several devices with different memory units.

I have developed a driver for SmartMedia card compliant with SmartMedia Interface Library (SMIL); now, with an opportune adapter (xd to smartmedia), i would also read/write the xD-picture card. With a 256 Mbyte xD standard card i haven't problem; with a H 512 Mbyte i can't write the card because it remains busy (ie. the ready/busy pin remains low after a write command).

I recently bought a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T200 with a Sony memory stick Pro duo 4 Gb. When i was trying to snap a photo, the screen showed "Format Error" and so, i reformatted and reinserted as instructed. It worked well for the next 15 minutes (i.e. could save the photos i shot) but during one of the playbacks, the screen showed "No Images" or "File Error". Plus, as i tried doing the reformatting procedures all over again, not only does it still show "Format Error", the memory card slot in my camera suddenly became a bit too tight for the card, i.e. fitted tightly in and require a bit of patience to eject the memory card out. Any advice?? Is it the camera's fault or the card's?

Some devices can only address a certain amount of memory space, thus it will only fill up as much memory as it is able to reference. To get very technical, if the device can only store memory addresses in 32-bits then it is limited to addressing about 2GB and can't go any further because it cannot "count" a memory address larger than this. I am having the opposite problem. I bought a K-Kam video recorder for the kids, but it can only address 512MB of space on the 2GB SD card I got (Cheap for $20!). Problem is that once it has formatted this card nothing will recognize it and the camera wont even recognize it (keeps asking to reformat). I am assuming the problem is that the camera isn't able to address the whole 2GB and because I cannot create partitions on the card so it has only 512MB it still thinks the card isn't ready. If anyone knows of any way to partition an SD card I would be grateful :)

I have a Sony Cybershot. Firstly, a few months ago I forgot my memory card...but I was still able to take photos with my camera...but I don't know how to transfer those photos onto my compter. It either only has my memory card photos, or nothing. Also, recently I haven't been able to zoom in with my camera. It says 'Turn the power off and on again' but it doesn't work, and when I do turn it on/off there seems to be a crackling sound...like there's something jammed but I don't see anything. Help anyone?

I was taking pictures on my camera and I took the chip out and put it in the computer it has a built in memory reader and it worked and the pictures saved and everything and then I took some more pictures and I took the chip out to put it back into the computer and it says "There is a problem reading the memory card. Ensure that it is not damaged and is insterted correctly" I did both of those things and there's nothing wrong with either i'm pretty sure. But now when I put the card into the camera it says "This card cannot be used" what the heck is going on?

I bought a 1GB MMC Plus Kingston. My nokia 9500 recognized it. I used my card reader to transfer some files from PC. It said it's not formatted. I format my MMC. PC read it now. Nokia 9500 can't read it anymore! Can't transfer more than 4MB(unable to find sector...). Can Rome.exe virus be the cause? Can my MMC can still be repaired? Thanks!
