Nikon beefs up Coolpix lineup

Hardly one to be overwhelmed by its competitors, Nikon yesterday announced a total of seven Coolpixes in the race to drum up some pre-Photokina excitement. The company also recently unveiled its latest digital SLR -- the D80 -- to compete in the midrange dSLR category.

From the looks of it, the new range of Coolpixes appears to be upgraded models from the current S- and L-series lineup. For instance, the S10 sports the same swivel lens body as the earlier S4, with the rest of the units also looking near identical in design as their predecessors.

This time round, Nikon has decided not to gatecrash the double-digit megapixel party with its compact digicams, but has instead opted to beef up its cameras with features like vibration reduction, face-priority autofocus and wireless LAN connectivity.

While there is no firm word on when we can expect these new Coolpixes to arrive, we're estimating it to be some time in September. For a more complete round-up of the new Nikons, refer to the table below.
