Kodak's contribution to this week's camera announcements are a pair of high-resolution compact digital cameras.

The EasyShare V803 and V1003 are two colourful, inexpensive shooters with some handy automatic features.

The two new cameras focus on style, with slim, inch-thick metal bodies that come in a variety of colours.

While US customers will have a veritable rainbow to choose from, Australia's selection will be more limited. Locally, the V1003 will come in Slate Grey, Midnight Black and Silver Essence, while the V803 adds White Glaze and Pink Bliss to its offerings. If the solid colours don't offer enough variety, Kodak will offer an entire catalogue of vinyl skins to further decorate your camera.

With price tags of US$199.95 and US$249.95 and resolutions of 8- and 10-megapixels, the V803 and V1003 join the growing ranks of budget-priced, high-resolution cameras. Besides their style and resolution, however, they're fairly standard point-and-shoot cameras.

Both models use a 36 to 108mm-equivalent lens, a 2.5-inch LCD screen, and the usual selection of scene presets. While their lenses aren't especially powerful, both cameras have digital image stabilisation and can reach up to ISO 1600 sensitivity.

Kodak's Australian Web site states a February release for the Kodak EasyShare V803 and March for the V1003 which mirrors the US schedule. Local pricing has not been announced.

The 50D is remarkably similar to the 40D in terms of performance, looks and features — but if you can spare the extra cash, it's a much nicer package.

The J100 is definitely a point-and-shoot — because you can't do anything else with it.

      Olympus E-520

The E-520 adds an appealing range of features to the existing Olympus line-up of dSLRs, but mostly for the first-time buyer. Apart from image stabilisation built into the body and the ability to use older lenses on the Four Thirds system, there is not much that really sets the E-520 apart from other cameras in its class.

Sony's T700 is a winner in the looks department, but beneath the brushed metal exterior lies a clever way to share photos. With 4GB of internal memory and a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, the T700 is a good, if slightly expensive camera, especially given that image quality isn't always up to scratch.
