As the annual imaging show inches nearer, Nikon has announced a series of new Coolpixes, including the P5000 for photography enthusiasts.

A total of eight Coolpix cameras were unveiled recently with the new P5000 stealing the limelight for its resemblance to the Canon PowerShot G7. Both shooters sport a 10-megapixel image sensor with high ISO features, optical image stabilisation, 2.5-inch LCD panel, optical viewfinder, support for addon lenses and external flash units.

Although the P5000 betters the PowerShot G7 with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 3,200 (at 5 megapixels) and a faster F2.7 glass, it has a shorter 3.5x optical zoom compared with the latter's 6x.

The P5000 ships in March at AU$579, which should provide photography enthusiasts with a very attractive alternative. Nikon Australia also expects the rest of the new Coolpix range to be available in mid-March.

Here's a quick breakdown of the new shooters.
