Fringing
For compact cameras, we expect to see some purple fringing on the very high contrast edges or those near the sides of the frame, like that of the upper right inset. But there's fringing on most of the lighter edges in the IXUS 970 IS' photos, even in the middle, as shown in the lower left inset.

Compared to the slick angles and chic lines of recent IXUS', the bubbly, bulbous curves of the Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS have us nonplussed. We hate to judge a camera just on its looks, but the lack of features don't give us much choice. Still, if you've fallen in love with this cheery snapper, you haven't wasted your money.
Hot on the heels of its pre-PMA announcements in January, Canon has added three new compact cameras to its IXUS range.
Besides the start-up time and stylus, it is hard to find fault with the FX520. Image quality has also improved and we really like the features that are incorporated with the touchscreen.
The Ricoh Caplio R7 is an outstanding compact camera, with all the features you could want packed into a sturdy, pocket-sized metal frame. It's not perfect and it's not cheap, but it is very much worth tracking down.
The P6000 is one of the first cameras to include GPS and it could well carve a niche for Nikon, but it has a lot of potential to be a better camera.
The 1050SW is a rugged adventure camera designed for swimmers and skiers, waterproof to 3 metres with 10.1 megapixels and tap control. Quirky features aside, the Olympus works just like any normal point-and-shoot.
The 50D is remarkably similar to the 40D in terms of performance, looks and features — but if you can spare the extra cash, it's a much nicer package.
The J100 is definitely a point-and-shoot — because you can't do anything else with it.
The E-520 adds an appealing range of features to the existing Olympus line-up of dSLRs, but mostly for the first-time buyer. Apart from image stabilisation built into the body and the ability to use older lenses on the Four Thirds system, there is not much that really sets the E-520 apart from other cameras in its class.
