Victorian police yesterday issued a warning to motorists travelling towards Mildura to put away their iPhones and iPads, and not trust Apple's Maps to navigate.
The warning comes after police had been called to rescue a number of stranded travellers, on several occasions. They had been directed into the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, which Apple Maps indicates as being Mildura itself. Police said that some of the motorists that had relied on Apple Maps had been stranded for up to 24 hours and had to walk a long distance to find phone reception to call for assistance.
Police had tested the route using Apple Maps themselves, and confirmed that the route was 70kms off the mark.
Wired is reporting that Apple has fixed the navigation, showing a screenshot of the corrected route, however, our tests locally have proved otherwise. We created routes from Adelaide, Swan Hill and Melbourne and were directed to the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park on each occasion.
