Panasonic's DMR-ES15 is an ideal entry-level recorder for anyone looking to upgrade their old VCR. The absence of a digital tuner will discourage digital TV users -- but compatibility, usability, recording and playback performance are otherwise excellent.

Just like Bill I have had nothing but problems. Broke down within 6 months. Took 1 month to get fixed. Had it for about 6 months same problem again. Due to crap warranty have to pay to get someone to look at it. Company is unsupportive.
Pros: When it worked was great and easy to use.
Cons: Bad reliability, bad company service. Shouldn't break down within first 18 months after release with the same problem.
Very good unit for archiving old videotapes. Setup is simple and straightforward, but do not throw away user manual as you will need it along the way. Recording sessions went smoothly and playback looked super!
Pros: Great playback, front panel sports lots of input options including firewire, easy setup.
Cons: Not all DV camcorders are supported by Panasonic in firewire mode (in my case Samsung is not), remote lacks an open/close button
I've had problems with 2 of them and had to ship both back with internal hardware failure. One within six months, the other in less than 2. I am really sad because I bought a total of 5 for my family for the holidays. I hate to find what I'm up against with them. Look elsewhere.
Cons: Although able to play NTSC dvds, this unit will not play them in my region (PAL). I have a number of Region 1 dvds (live in Region 4) and they will not play. I tried to copy one to PAL format, but again no play. On further investigation, this unit will not play anything copied using pc software (except for one program). I object to my activities being censored by something I have bought.
Toshiba's XD-E500 provides a simple way to make humble DVDs look a bit better, but don't be fooled into thinking that it'll magically turn them into Blu-Ray discs.
Even the lowest-end notebooks on the market these days sport DVD-ROM drives, so why shouldn't you just plump for a notebook to meet your portable DVD watching needs?
Verbatim today announced the immediate availability of blank BD-R and BD-RW Blu-ray media, joining TDK and Sony as the three manufacturers shipping blank Blu-ray discs to Australia at this point in time. In contrast, HD-DVD blanks are still yet to arrive.
In an industry first, all of the commercial TV broadcasters have announced today they will provide an electronic program guide to all manufacturers of free-to-air personal video recorders and similar services.

Good overall recording. DVD-RAM recording is a benefit for the most superior recordings, however at 10AUD per disc, only for the very wealthy.
Only problem is I can't region unlock it. No Hacks code I could find.
Pros: Nice design
Good recordings
Cons: No inbuilt tuner for improved recordings.
