Panasonic DMR-ES15 User reviews

The good:

  • Multi-format compatibility
  • DV input
  • Easy-to-use, accurate recordings
  • Impressive DVD playback

The bad:

  • Ordinary design
  • Analog tuner only
  • No RGB Scart input

The bottomline:

Panasonic's DMR-ES15 is an ideal entry-level recorder for anyone looking to upgrade their old VCR. The absence of a digital tuner will discourage digital TV users -- but compatibility, usability, recording and playback performance are otherwise excellent.

Better than the price tag suggests.

Pros: Four hour playback on a RAM disk in LP mode is a perfect 21st Century replacement for your old VCR. Avoid the 8 hour mode as the quality is too far gone into the irritating to be watchable. RAM disks allow reuse just as a VHS tape would. Deleting before reuse takes a bit of getting used to but you will never go over something accidentally ever again.

Cons: I am trying to rip a written DVD-R onto my computer and the format is not known. I am guessing an hour of research will fix this, but it would be nice to know which codec it uses for the LP mode.

Better than the competition

I was interested in this product along with the Samsung R130 because they were the 2 players which could pretty much play everything. However what I got with the Samsung was annoying screen messages detailing every single thing the recorder was doing (Really obtrusive and frequent), and silly design issues which included poor playback of finalized discs on other players.

I am pleased to say the Panasonic addresses all these issues. In fact it seems as if thought has gone in specifically to tackle these issues. The old Panasonic recorders used to have a small amount of messages displayed letting the user know sometimes irrelevant information, the new player has completely scrapped the system, and therefore just provides a much better user experience.

Absent is a zoom function which is quite dissapointing, and the Panasonic remote does not prove the most compatible with televisions it should be able to also control, however the fact a cheap player like this records Dual layer (Double time) and has the best LP recording system on the market, there are no real complaints.

This is the best Recorder on the market for people who dont have $500 to fork out on a hard drive recorder, and easily beats competition from all sides.

Pros: *Excellent recording modes
*Top of the line Playback capabilities

Cons: *No zoom function
*Slightly slower to load blank discs than the Samsung R130

Great replacement for VCR

I bought this to replace my broken VCR and I love it. I've seen a couple of tests and this model is the pick of the bunch in this price range.

Pros: Versatile DVD RAM. EP(8.0hr) recording mode is totally watchable. Scart connectors. Cartridge RAM protects discs.
$320.00.

Cons: Remote a bit complicated for the wife. Remembering to delete recorded programs before programing (with old VCR you just tape over the top).
