Biography: Lee Grant is a photographer currently residing in suburban Canberra where she is undertaking a Masters in Research at the Australian National University in the department of Photography and Media Arts. She returned to photography after a 10-year domestic hiatus, and in between pursuing children, pets and bill-paying jobs, Lee now likes to go on suburban safaris where she meets and photographs all kinds of interesting people and places.

Her next show will be in the exhibition "Inheritance" at the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney from 1 May to 6 June 2009.

Lee is also the curator of Light Journeys, a new website that will soon be launched to promote and support Australian women working in photography. Her main website can be found at www.leegrant.net.

Belco Pride

"Belco's a hole ... but it's our hole"

This body of work explores how belonging, connection and identity can emerge from a specific place, in this instance the 25 northernmost suburbs of Canberra known as Belconnen, or to us locals, as "Belco":

"I always believed it was the things you don't choose that makes you who you are. Your city, your neighbourhood, your family. People here take pride in these things, like it was something they'd accomplished. Like the bodies around their souls, and the cities wrapped around those. I lived on this block my whole life; most of these people have." — Excerpt from Dennis Lehane's Gone Baby Gone

Canberra_Photographer clearly has no friends, just because you are anonymous on the internet, doesn't mean you can be an abusive 'Boston Pancake'. Belco-Pride is great. As a person who has grown up in Belco, it is funny to see the area find some place in an otherwise young city. "Straight out of Belcompton".

There is artistic merit and charm to these works. The hedge and the portraits in particular. It's not what appeals to my senses but I see it. Loosen up a bit Canberra_photographer.
