F.E.A.R. 2 banned in Australia

Even by Australian standards, 2008 has been a depressing year when it comes to game bannings. The country's tough censorship laws have seen several games banned from sale this year, including Silent Hill: Homecoming, Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, Dark Sector, and Fallout 3 (although the last two were eventually allowed to be sold locally after some content modifications were made). Unfortunately for gamers, there's more bad news to come.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin — the sequel to hit first-person shooter F.E.A.R. — has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board, making it illegal to sell or even bring into the country. In Australia, the highest rating available for a game is MA15+, as opposed to other forms of media, such as films or DVDs, which have an R18+ classification that prohibits sales of titles carrying that rating to anyone under the age of 18. Games that feature content deemed unsuitable for an MA15+ rating are refused classification and are effectively banned from sale.

Project Origin was scheduled for release in Australia in February, 2009. The horror-themed action shooter continues the story of the first game, while adding new elements such as the ability to pilot mechs within the game.

According to the Classification Board report on Project Origin, the game was refused classification because of its "high-impact violence".

"The violence is considered highly impactful in such scenes as where Michael uses his sub machine gun to explicitly bisect an enemy, the two parts of the body lying separately on the ground, with copious blood spray. There are also a number of explicit close range decapitations involving both human and mutant creatures. The decapitations are the result of close-up throat slashing from behind and close-up gunshots to the throat," the Board report says.

"All violence results in large blood spray: there are blood-stained interiors and blood sprays onto objects, including the camera lens. With weapons such as sniper rifles, bodies can be torn apart at close range, limbs are seen flying off and the wounded flesh is reduced to a bloody pulp. The use of nail-guns pins victims to a wall before they fall to the ground in a bloody mass. The scenes often have blood soaked walls and floors and the victims' bodies do not always disappear."

A Warner Bros. Interactive spokesman confirmed to CNET Australia's sister site, GameSpot AU, that the company will be appealing the Classification Board's decision and was "looking at all avenues" to ensure Project Origin gets an Australian release.

Games are becoming way too violent these days. I used to enjoy killing soldiers and mutant creatures when I was young, but anyone who has values would not play such games feeling OK. But if people still want to play 'em, then +18 should be introduced which is unlikely in the near future. I hope this doesn't happen with the internet.

Good to know such utter crap is banned. Amounts to desensitisation of the player in preparation for similar actions in the real world.

Holy Crap! This is hilarious! F.E.A.R. 2 is now unbanned (it's been given an MA15+ rating). This is totally stupid, because F.E.A.R. 2 is NOT a 15-year-old's game, but because the SCAG are stuck in the dark ages and don't want to introduce an R18+ rating, we get this adult's only game with a 15+ rating. AUSTRALIA NEEDS AN R18+ RATING! (see: http://au.xbox360.ign.com/articles/938/938700p1.html?RSSwhen2008-12-15_212600&RSSid=938700)

I agree with zaoc,

Ever since coming back to live in Australia (lived in England for 10yrs)
its sees that Aus are going in the wrong directions and are taking steps backward are making the country worse. (no offence I love Aus)

F.E.A.R was the scariest game i have ever played, it was insane! That girl was like the chick off the ring :P

And by refusing F.E.A.R 2 to be released here Aus's economy/GDP will be missing out!

But i do agree about the bisecting and body part lying around and I see why they would try to stop it being released,
but that doesn't mean they should...

The problem is that mentally unstable people play these games and take it to heart with real violence - this is what wrecks it for everyone else. That is what the government and censorship board are trying to prevent, and those borderline cases where they wouldn't have done it, if they hadn't been shown it...

Complete and utter crap, really. I'd prefer to pay money to own a legit copy than pirate, but if I can't import it from USA I'll definately be on the torrent sites. It's a bloody joke. First they f**k our internet as a christmas present (starting 24th Dec 08) - upto 87% slower, 1 / 12 legit sites will not work etc. Now this? I've never been less proud to be an Australian. It's a f**king joke.

I think what annoys me most, is that these tools at the Australian Classification Board will let pretty much any kid walk into a movie theatre and watch saw 5 or some other film with intense gore, but they will refuse to let a 22 year old play a R+ 18 video game?

I mean where the heck is the balance there? I mean it just goes to show how backwards the Australian classification system is?

I mean my 12 year old cousin can rock up to blockbuster and hire pretty much any film he likes with out the person behind the counter asking a question?

Its ridiculous, either bring out an R+18 rating or actually ban ALL gore and content

It just sounds like the board is half-**** ingtheir job
