As screen resolutions increase and digital images get larger, Facebook has increased the maximum pixel width of all new photos uploaded onto the site to 720 pixels.
The increase doesn't apply retroactively to older photos though, which will remain at 604 pixels. Users will start to see the bigger photos over the coming days.
Facebook is the most popular photo-sharing tool on the internet and the move to wider photos looks like a move to encroach onto the territory of other photo-sharing services like Flickr, which offer different sizes to view photos.
