Fake iPod versus the real thing

About The Author

Derek loves nothing more than punching a remote location into a GPS, queuing up some music and heading out on a long drive, so it's a good thing he's in charge of CNET Australia's Car Tech channel.

CNET Australia's Shanghai correspondent heads down to the market and buys a fake iPod. To see how they compare, we not only give them a run, but also measure and take them apart.

Best Buy are using fake ipods on replacements! I brought an ipod from them as well as their protection plan. I had some issues with my ipod so I took it in for a repair, they told me I can either get the same one repaired or get a new one in exchange(which they said it would be faster). Of course I went for the faster option but only to find out they gave me a FAKE one!

Best Buy must be fixing the new ones to resell it and use the fake ones to send back to customers. Best Buy are ripping people of with fake ipods!

well of course the blue one is fake!! it looks like a piece of crap compaired to the real one.

Just by looking at the blue one, you could tell straight away which one was fake and which was real. Seriously, one has the curved display which is fully square (orange one) whereas the other is flat and has curved corners (blue fake).

the burning question I have is: how many years before an IPOD becomes a piece of junk?

All tech stuff last in a small period of time but usually fake item last for a few months before dying out. the real one last about max 3years if in good condition with case. real one gives you a no fuss and better experience.....
-more environmental friendly
-safer
-better software
-better buttons
-better sound
-has warranty
fake items are mostly for people that cant afford a higher cost for higher quality or has minimal use of music

You're right about the fake item, having a much smaller life span, but if you take care of your real one, it could last you over 3 years. Remember back in the day of Apple mini's? Mine works just like new, just by being protected with a case, and not being dropped or anything that could harm your iPod. I totally agree with you, with bying a real iPod. Or if you don't have that much money, get a MP3, even though it doesn't lookas good, it does the same job. Just don't get those crappy ones at two dollar stores :)
