A project called "Art x Smart" is injecting famous works of art with a dose of 21st-century technology.

Perhaps the real reason Edvard Munch's subject is screaming is a shattered smartphone screen. Perhaps Diego Velázquez's Rokeby Venus was just trying to capture a selfie. Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer just wanted to get a really fancy Instagram.

The appearance of modern technology in some of history's best-loved masterpieces allows us to interpret them in a very different way. Created by Kim Dong-Kyu in a project called Art x Smart, they strip the works of something of their grandeur, allowing us, perhaps, to connect with the people they depict.

The intent of the pieces is a little different, urging us (in a light-hearted fashion) to reflect on the impact of technology and how smartphones have changed social interaction — but that's the beauty of art, really: it's open to interpretation. We choose to think of it also as a way to look through the years and consider that people, essentially, will always be people, whether we have smartphones or not.

Of course, any dork with access to Photoshop can have a go at inserting modern tech into classical masterpieces. Give it a go and send us a link to your creation in the comments below.

And head over to Design Boom to check out the rest of Dong-Kyu's collection.
