Five years of CNET Australia: Camcorders

By Derek Fung on 05 August 2009

Would you pay two thousand smackers for a camcorder that's chunky, heavy and only records in standard definition? Don't laugh, were this 2004 that's exactly what you would be doing, if you were in the market for a top quality camcorder that is.

Chunky for a punky

When CNET Australia sprung to life oh so many moons ago the dominant medium for consumer digital video was tape. This meant not only extra weight for the drive mechanism, but also that you had to record in a continuous fashion — so no deleting random boo-boos or less important footage to free up a bit more recording space. It also meant time-consuming transfers from tape onto your computer.
