Foxtel iQ Personal Digital Recorder

Great if you love your Foxtel, but it’s not the “ultimate” personal digital recorder solution Australia has been waiting for.

- Good: Watch what you want when you want. The Networks are lagging badly here.
I have had my IQ for over 12 months and am extremely happy with it. the 7 & 10 EPG issues are not the fault of Foxtel. We now have 3 units in the house and all perform tremendously.

Foxtel IQ is great.
It isnt the most feature packed thing to appear but its ease of use and good integration with the foxtel shows makes it worth it.
also something that should be noted it that even today copyright laws ban most things, foxtel IQ lets you do it legally as they have a licence to allow us to record shows, they can only do this by encrypting the HDD and not allowing users to copy the shows to other media.
sure you can use your own device but at this time you can only time shift it once b4 you have to delete it or else its a copyright violation.
with IQ you can legally keep it as long as u want and if their is a limit IQ will tell you -

- Good: Everything is fabulous
- Bad: NILL
Just got IQ yesterday and we are very impressed, sleek design of remote, very very simple to use and extremely easy to record shows. We are loving it and see nothing wrong with it, already recorder 3 full length movies andhave got 92% space left to record!! How good is that!! Highly recommend IQ to everyone.

- Good: Good recording, plenty of space for recorded programs.
- Bad: The 7 and 10 EPG info, although this is not completely their fault but due to the stupid laws in Australia which protect guide info (how backwards is Australia)
Obviously you people dont know how to use the box or you just got duds because i have been using it for the last year or so and had no failed recordings ever. Once had to reboot the machine but that is normal for any set top box. As for whinging about the price, stick to crappy free to air if you dont like it or try and get it through Optus like i do if it available in your area, i pay $60 a month and nothing for the IQ.

- Good: ease of use, capacity, integration with foxtel
- Bad: occasional loss of recordings, series link failure, lack of info on 7 & 10 programs, monthly rental
Pretty good, but no real alternative
Given that it is a monopoly with no alternative then it isn't too bad. I have had the brush off and "well, return it then" when I have tried to report failed recordings, but again a monopoly does that. The really narky thing is the monthly rental. Would dearly love an alternative.

- Good: Recording; Rewinding and pausing. Ease of use.
- Bad: Annoying bulky remote. I would appreciate a way to 'rent' a box office event or pay per view for a longer period - perhaps a week. Sometimes the whole family wants to see something but cannot arrange to do it within the 24 hours. People are busy! Thats why we wanted to be able to record and watch when we can...
Beats the **** out of the regular digital set top box

- Good: Fairly decent system, intuiative menus and generally reliable
- Bad: Series link isn't available on all programs, it sometimes drops shows altogether, its not smart enough to continue a link in the future, the search facility is extremely poor (some programs don't even get listed when they are on!), no digitial signals to indicate program start/end
Foxtel Software problems
What foxtel wont tell you is that they are currently having serious software problems with the IQ. I had to force it out of an operator who said they wont advertise the problem. Essentially there are bugs in the software relating to series link and I was told to specifically use manual recording for better results. What I believe is that someone at foxtel must manually enter the series link information and that with human error this often goes wrong. There is nothing "digital" about foxtel... other than the fact it transmits digitally. They blamed the program makers saying THEY are responsible for series link information... bah!
